Open FedEx position

They do consider cost of living for FDX. I know people have tried to argue that "Delta gets this, United gets that" and they argue that 1. Atlanta and Chicago are way more expensive to live in and 2. They are pax carries so they try to compare with UPS for the most part.

They do show a chart comparison with pax airlines at the pay review every year, but it's adjusted to cost of living. This was all before Fred died. Now? Who knows. Feels like they want to run this place into the ground and were just waiting on him to pass so that they could do it. I hope I'm wrong!!! I've been here double digit years and even I'm thinking of trying to get on somewhere else. It's just not the same FedEx that everyone used to love.

Interesting. As dispatchers at the level of the legacies and UPS/FDX, we still require the same certificate, exercise the same operational control, conduct the same flight watch and likely work around similar OpsSpecs with exemptions. We even share information amongst ourselves with regards to conducting certain operations. If it came down to it, I doubt the leadership at my shop would be willing to take less than FedEx/UPS just because of boxes. Last I saw, ya’ll were still crossing the Atlantic alongside one of mine from the states.

Regarding the not the same ____ that everyone used to love. There’s a little bit of that everywhere sadly, and I’ve seen it in other places as private equity takes a hold. It’s just the sign of the times and an unfortunate trend. I still appreciate my shop in the big city and I don’t imagine it being that much different than Memphis. Housing costs are still breaking the bank in reasonable to desirable areas.

Anyone else get invited to take the assessment test? Just wanted to make sure it's a legit invitation. Probably is. Sent by Mgr of Global Ops Control. Email has a legit signature block with contact info (no Fedex logo). Test is for Tuesday 7/15. Group session via monitored Zoom.

We definitely don’t feel like we have a good sense of direction lately. Personally, I’ve been dismayed by the control center situation. Hopefully we are just in a temporary lull. But I think it would be foolish to give up the pay and seniority to jump ship if you’ve been here this long. Things aren’t THAT bad.

Good luck friend. It’s been so long since I interviewed that I’m sure how they do things has changed now. If I had any inside tips I’d certainly pass them on but unfortunately I have no idea what the process is now.

What's the control center situation? Are they debating on moving?

We work out of our backup control center a majority of the week. We only go to the main control center on the weekends now. Rumor is they are looking for a new facility for us for a new main control center. But it would still be in the Memphis area

Interesting they choose to work out of the backup as the primary. Complete switch of spots.

Well, United's current primary was originally planned to be the backup. And the former primary is now the backup. So it's not unheard of.
Does United go back and forth as well? A 70/30 split of time? Just seems unnecessary is all but I'm not too versed in it.

It was split operations until the end of last year (since 2020, people had picked which facility they wanted to work in) but since then the backup (old primary) has not been used at all.

Well, our primary is next to the airport and it’s not a safe area by any means. We’ve had several scary events people have experienced while driving in. Our backup is in a much safer area. With that being said, the area by the airport has always been bad so the conspiracy theorist in me says because a good portion of management lives out closer to the backup center, that’s the real reason for being out there. But they’ll cite safety. If it was really all about safety in my opinion then we should be at the backup 100% of the time, and maybe only occasionally go to the primary to make sure the computers are up to date and such.

The good thing about having two ops centers, on opposite ends of the city is during inclement weather we will do split ops…so the people that live on the west end can work out of the primary and east end out of the backup.

I mean, I'd say the argument for any airport anywhere isn't safe in the surrounding area hahah. They are few and far between when they are safe.
