Online Aviation Degrees

I did UVU. Pretty solid program. It gets the job done. They do credit and work experience (as mentioned). Financial aid was helpful. Each class has a help desk via chat that is available during business hours. That was good. As for cost, I think it was fairly priced at the time I did it. (A few years ago). I throw my .02c in and say that I wish I would have majored in something completely unrelated to aviation. I learned a little above and beyond what you would through ratings, but to be honest a degree in accounting or econ, or under water basket weaving leaves you being a well rounded person. Alas, your OP was about aviation degrees so I will just end in saying that I would do UVU's program again if that was a route I was choosing.

I am at Mountain State right now. The classes are easy, and it's cheeaap! But you sort of get what you pay for. Their communication is terrible. Let me know if you have any specific questions about them.

Honestly there's not a lot to say. You sign up for the class, pay the money for the class, download the syllabus, do the work, turn in work, hopefully get an A.

Absolutely not.

In fact I, as I'm sure many will, caution against an aviation degree at all.

Eh, I say major in what interests you. You're more likely to finish. Sure, I would have made more money as a veterinarian (maybe), but I was burned out by year 3 of undergrad with several years to go. If you have to make yourself do the homework and go to class, the odds are significantly greater of you dropping out. If you study something you enjoy, you don't have to make yourself do those thing. You WANT to do them. In retrospect, I wish I'd just done the history degree thing when I was in college the first time, however that's about as "useful" as an aviation degree without any kind of post graduate stuff to go with it.

If you already have a degree, there's really no reason to get an aviation degree, though.

I'll get on the boat with all the guys who say:

"Get a degree in anything but aviation.."

Get something that if you should hate or are forced out or etc, etc, etc of aviation you can still get a job..

There is no real reason to get an aviation degree.. You don't need a major in "pilot" to be one.. :)

If I had a degree I could apply to something else, I'm a poli sci major, I'd be soo far gone from 121 flying..

I did the BA and MA in poli sci. As far as preparing you for fields such as the military, foreign service, intel community, public admin, other civil service jobs and defense contractors, international biz I think it is a pretty good major.

If you are young enough, you could always go civil service. Not wanting to contradict you, but I think poli sci is somewhat unfairly maligned. :)

Edit: oops I think I misread your statement. You are still working on the BA... I think you should be plenty marketable with your 121 time, and that degree.

I already have the degree and I'm trying to get out of 121.. So far PoliSci has been worthless unless I wanna go be a cop, from what I can see..

I'm not willing to move for work though, so that limits me right off the bat..

I'm in the program at UVU. It's a great program for me for a few reasons. First, I like learning about aviation, so I'm enjoying working towards checking that box. Second, it's easy. The classes are fun and it's not difficult to get A's. Third, the financing is great. They allow you to finance your flight loans through FAFSA loans and/or a private bank offering student loans. You can finance about $14,000 per semester for your training. It's a much better rate than most flight schools offer and the payments are defered until graduation. The support staff at UVU has been very helpful and the school is accredited. PM me if you have any other questions about the program.

If you go back to school why get another BS? Get your masters.

I think this is great advice. I spent 6 years getting a 2 year degree because I didn't care at all about what I was studying. I'm in love with aviation and enjoy studying and learning about it; so I think my best shot at finishing school would be to go this route.

I can totally see where the "don't get an aviation degree" opinions are coming from. But, these days, a degree is a degree. A degree in aviation when applying for a job in a non aviation related field is better than no degree at all.

Thanks to everyone for all the input and advice!

Unless you plan on getting a graduate degree of some sort, get your undergrad in what you are interested in. Like Kellwolf said, you are more likely to finish. Business degrees are a dime a dozen, as are psychology, arts, English, and history. Just get a degree. The job you land one day will boil down to experience, be it an airline, or a marketing consultant, or sales.
Having said that, the program at Utah Valley is very affordable, and does not take a huge investment in your time. Yes, you have to study, but the classes are on the easy side, and you do learn a lot. Credit for all ratings prior to start is given, and I have never had any problems with their support. Good luck.
