Online Aviation Degrees

I'm new to JC. I've enjoyed reading all the posts/info/insight in the last month. I thought you guys might have some good advice.

Anyone recommend any schools offering an online bachelors in an aviation field? I've looked into Mountain State and they seem solid. Of course I'd like a school that will give me credit for my FAA ratings. It appears that most do. I've completed an AA degree and Mountain State said they would credit most of my work. I don't want to jump into the first school I talk to. Has anybody had any good/bad experiences with Mountain State. Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Also check out Utah Valley and Thomas Edison. I know people who have used both. Edison credits you for licenses and aviation experience. I think Utah Valley does as well, but im not entirely sure.

Im sure you know this already, but one thing to make sure of (especially when completing your degree online) is that the schools are accredited.

Good luck!

I just finished mine up at ERAU. It's not the cheapest route to go, but it was pretty painless. Helps if you have one of the satellite locations in town, too. They gave me credit for almost all of the classes I took back in the 90s (even gave me a 3 hour elective credit for the "honors forum" class I took that was 1 credit per semester), I CLEPed out of a few class and I got credit for all of my flight ratings. It's not cheap, but I recommend it.

This is what I'm thinking about doing starting spring semester. How many semesters did you do?

No clue. On-line is different. It's on a 6 week schedule. As soon as one rotation was done, I'd start another one.....if I had the $$$. I took a nearly 4 year hiatus in between due to lack of funds. Once I upgraded, I finished the last 4 classes I needed. I guess it took me about 6 or 7 of those 6 week rotations, but most of them I was only taking 2 classes at once. A couple I did three, and some I only did one. Depended on how much $$$ I had at the time. I wouldn't recommend doing more than 3 at a time, though.

Did the ERAU thing too. As mentioned it was pretty painless, but I didnt mind it to be that much more expensive than the traditional instate 4 year school I went to previously.

ERAU. 36 units for ATP, or CFI/II/MEI, or COMEL with 500tt (IIRC). The course profs. all work in their field, and understand what kind of messed up schedule people have who take on-line courses.

I did ERAU online as well. Was a good experience. You get the academics of ERAU without the huge cost and ego .

The key as another poster said is to make sure the school is accredited, otherwise yo would have paid for a worthless degree. ERAU and Utah Valley are the two more popular options that are accredited.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've always heard that ERAU is super expensive. Is the online degree program cheaper? How does the cost of the online ERAU compare to the online Utah Valley/Mountain State/any other program. (if anyone knows?) I thought Mountain State was expensive. If ERAU is even close I would defiantly consider it especially since so many of you have endorsed it. Cost is a big factor. I'm already in plenty of debt from getting my ratings.

I did the ERAU extended campus thing and it was WAY cheaper than the traditional courses. This is from their website:

Worldwide Online
Undergraduate Students
Item Cost
Tuition $5,160
Books (estimated) $1,040
Total $6,200

Undergraduate Students
Item Cost
Tuition and Fees $28,600
Room and Board $8,500
Books (estimated) $1,200
Total, non-flight students $38,300
Estimated annual flight costs* $15,000
Total, flight students $53,300

I just got an email last week from Everglades University announcing they just got regionally accredited.

If I remember correctly 9 credit hours plus books was about $2,600.

I don't mean to thread hijack, but should someone that already has a BS in another field think about doing an online aviation degree at all?

What I mean to ask is: will I learn enough that will make the extra degree worthwhile?

Unless you really enjoy school and spending money I say its not worth it if you already have a degree.

I did riddle online. It's significantly cheaper. Takes some motivation to do it yourself, but you learn stuff reel good.

Absolutely not.

In fact I, as I'm sure many will, caution against an aviation degree at all.

$500 per class (not unit) + books at Riddle on-line.

Online is much much cheaper at ERAU. As far as Utah Valley, last I heard they are still cheaper than ERAU's online classes.
