OMG ... SDL just DOESN'T get it ...

If specified, this will replace the title that
OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

https://www.ci.scottsdale.az.us/Airport/PledgeForm.asp

Two things:
1) This is insulting to me as a pilot who uses this airport – the fact that I "obey" noise abatement is my "pledge."
2) Where, exactly, is the "Good Airport NEIGHBOR Pledge?"

Re: OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

What?

Looks like the city of Scottsdale is trying to help pilots here. Now they can show residents that they are doing something to help control the noise problem. What else would you suggest they do?

Yes, most of the people complaining about the noise are whiners. However, pilots should at least consider their complaints. Why not do your touch and gos at another airport, and why not shoot your practice approaches to a higher MDA on the chart? There is no reason to go flying over the houses south of the airport at 500 agl with the props full forward. Unless you have business there I would stay away from that airport. Same goes for the military. Yes, I have great respect for the military, but why not fuel stop at IWA? Was there some reason they HAD to go to SDL?

Re: OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

First, I'm based out of FFZ and I do avoid the SDL airport as much as possible – however my point was that this is yet again another concession made by the aviation community to the idiots who moved in next to an airport without doing any kind of research before buying their home. How, exactly, is it the fault of some random pilot that Joe Idiot bought a $500,000 home a 1/2 mile from an airport that has been there since 1942?

There are already noise abatement procedures. There are already curfews. There is already an 800 number (for local calls, mind you) for noise complaints and 90% of those complaints come from one person. What do they want pilots to do next ... go door to door and personally apologize for using a facility they have every right to use? Hopw many more concessions does the aviation community have to offer up? Where do we finally draw the line in the sand?

The point is unless the aviation community starts fighting back the other side "wins." We continually give in (usually in the form of noise abatement, curfews, etc.) and "they" are never satisfied, "they" just wat more concessions.

It's still a fair question ... if the pilots have a "good neighbor pledge" where is the pledge for the home owners? What's fair for one is fair for all.

Yes, a majority of the complaints are whiners, IMO. If there are complaints of aircraft violating altitudes, etc, then action should be taken. I suppose planes could do practice approaches to higher MDAs, but I also think most residents seeing a plane flying over their house, regardless of altitude, will still complain for the sake of pushing their agenda against the airport. I think that pilots could give major concessions, and that would never be enough. At the same time, any concession given can never be gotten back.....almost like the whole argument of giving up constitutional rights for security, etc. The other problem is, how does one define who does and who doesn't have business there? IMO, no one would agree on a definition or criteria for that. Would training or utilizing the pattern or IAPs constitute business? Would doing the same, if someone lands and buys 100LL? All things that, IMO, would need to be considered.

I agree that there's some legit complaints amongst the plethora of whining.

Re: OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

I wish I lived near the airport. I miss the shake shake of the house from the DC-9 engines at night. The louder the jet, the better I have a chance to run to the window and see what it is

.

On residences.. remember a good 6-7 years ago, just about every afternoon a military jet (twin engine centerline, I was young ignorant and did not know remember exact type) would buzz the rich neighborhood near my school where I'd hang out with my friends... I found it awesome, of course I was not living there.

Military jets can be amazingly loud from the ground though.. Sometimes I wonder when I hear the loud sounds and look up to see the two F-16s way up there.

LOL.............here's the solution. Mr Christie has the idea. I love it!

Shut down everything

Oct. 25, 2004 12:00 AM

I agree with Mary Gosule ("Say what? Can't hear you," Letters, Wednesday) that for the sake of peace and quiet we should close Sky Harbor International and Scottsdale airports.

I also hear a lot of noise from Hayden Road and Loop 101. We ought to close those while we're at it. And the other morning I heard noise from the Saguaro High School band while it practiced outdoors. We'd better shut that down as well. I'm also not too far from Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, and I hear an almost constant stream of ambulances and helicopters headed that way. We'd better shut that down, too.

And how about those crickets at night? - Hunter Christie

Re: OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

Hell yeah! And shut down my cul de sac too! There were some kids playing catch, one of the punks missed the ball and it slammed into my garage door!

That was loud! Shut it down!

Re: OMG ... SDL just DOESN\'T get it ...

Carty Finkbeiner, the former Mayor of Toledo, Ohio once suggested that they move all the deaf people near the airport to reduce noise complaints. Sounds like a great plan to me.
