Not that I’m running around my my hair on fire, but it’s a bigger deal than we’re able to admit, but hopefully not as big of a deal as the Chinese are marking it.

Influenza kills 0.1% of the people it infects. COVID-19 at 3% is a big deal. Doesn’t seem like much but it is.

3% of diagnosed cases. The big x-factor is, how many people get it and are never diagnosed? They say that the virus probably has been circulating in Seattle for 6 weeks. If the overall mortality rate was actually 3% we’d see a lot more dead people by now.

I’m thinking not. 80% of those infected show symptoms no worse than a common cold or a flu that lasts a few days. How many people are just staying home from work for a few days while they recover and not thinking much of it?

The only thing I've done differently is that hand sanitizer is a "no-go" item for me now at work (there's a few big jugs of it downstairs in my office now, and I refill the bottles before I go to work). Beyond that, meh.

I figure that's really the only thing I can do, too, so.

There's other concerns like, if the death rate is 3%, and it infects as many people in the usa as the flu, then the deaths will be an order of magnitude and some change larger than the 35,000. Now you can pretend this conversation is political in nature too because I voted too once and I follow politics often, however, I assure that isn't the case.

Five guys is magnitudes worse for people than McDonald’s. But they are way more McDonald’s spread across the country. I think that’s the kind of logic lost on some people.

Certainly it is prudent to warn about the virus, and offer information on how it is contracted and what can be done to prevent it. But that's not what the media is doing. They're painting a picture of an Outbreak-like pandemic and, as I say, I think their motivations are other than the public good.

A judicious approach now does not empty the options box for the future. But the media is setting the village on on fire, when they ought to be lighting a signal lantern.

If only another country had had an outbreak so we could learn from them things like how easily it spreads and what measures are effective at containment.

It’s been said a few times in various threads, but it's worth repeating:

These figures are not apples-to-apples, and not comparable.

Influenza’s mortality rate is drastically lower because the denominator includes both confirmed cases and estimates for suspected cases.

COVID-19’s mortality rate is only being calculated off confirmed cases, with no estimates for suspected cases.

Everyone should certainly go about their days/lives being prudent: wash your hands, avoid touching your face after handshaking or touching contaminated surfaces, covers coughs, etc. If you have flu-like symptoms but no fever or difficulty breathing, call your PCP. If you have flu-like symptoms with high fever and respiratory issues, go to your emergency department. But we shouldn't necessarily throw around figures that are designed to incite hysteria and spin the media flywheel.
