Oh United

I’m pleasantly surprised today, I’ll be honest. I was anticipating a “blood bath”. The news will worsen this week. Deaths will continue as a result and community-level outbreaks will spread. They’re already predicting a 23%+ drop in airline revenue as a result of this. And we haven’t even hit a stride in it yet. This will get worse before it gets better I fear.
Sounds like a lot of paranoia. I'm definitely not looking forward to the next 6 months but also think some people need to chill the way they fear this thing. Have yet to see a reason why we should be preparing for doomsday.

Think about it like this; the problem with this virus isn't that it kills a large number of patients, it's that it kills 3% but sticks around long enough to get passed on.

A high number of fatalities will be driven by exposure.

Or think about it in outdoor sports terms. If 40% of the planet rode crest trail, then we'd see a huge number of people dying on mountain bikes. Or if 40% of the planet climbed BCC, we'd see a huge number of people dying while climbing.

It's the amount of people exposed that drives how many people die.

How's that relate to the economy? China is paranoid enough about this to shut down their entire economy over it. That's done, so now the market is baking in the correction for that stoppage that already exists, even though we haven't felt it yet.

Why'd china crap their pants? Because 40% of 1 billion is 400 million, and 3% of that is 1.2 million people.

It's hard to hold on to power when 1.2 million people in your country die suddenly.

Here's the 40% number: Harvard scientist: coronavirus pandemic likely will infect 40-70% of world this year

3% is a wag, but it also isn't you that dies; it's me and my daughter because we have asthma. I mean I think we'd probably survive this, but we're the ones in the high risk category for any kind of respiratory illnesses.

We can’t both take precautions, travel restrictions on one hand, but tell ourselves “Oh, it’s just a little bit of light birdshot across the face, he’s more embarrassed than hurt” on the other hand.

Wash your damn hands, cover your mouth and stay the frak home if you’re sick.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
The fact it can spread from asymptomatic people makes that hard though. Plus if anyone who suffered allergies stayed home with a sniffle in the chance is corona is uhh... never going to leave the house.
(Which I mean, if I had the opportunity to not have to put pants on for 14-28 days..)

Maybe. I have a tendency to be pessimistic (realistic as I call it) but I’ve paid a lot more attention after 08’/09’ when it comes to this stuff. The scary thing about this virus and what actually has experts spooked is how fast it is spreading and how easily it spreads. There is also a lot of unknown right now in terms of how exactly to detect it. Dogs can have it supposedly. They’re now saying that babies and young children can carry the disease while showing no outward symptoms. All of this information that’s coming out simply tells me they aren’t 100% sure about a lot of this at this point.

Regarding our industry... Sports teams are playing to empty stadiums in Italy and Japan. There is talk of quarantining entire European cities. And it’s only still very fresh in the United States. We went from, “it’s probably going to show up here in the United States” just last week to, “we’re monitoring thousands and people are dying” this week. As this accelerates people are going to act accordingly. Watch how fast this industry can turn.
