Oh Dacuj

The only thing that matters is "Can you work well with others and Dont be an ass-hole"

The f/o and I were just having that discussion last night. Talking about interview preps, qualifications nowadays and how to even get an called for an interview. Besides having the usual Space shuttle type rating with a Space X add-on, PHD in Quantum and theoretical physics, solving world hunger during your down time and at least 10 Rec's (you know, the usual stuff:p), I told him by the time you're called it *ALL* boils down to...Can I spend 3 days locked up in the cockpit with this person?!? Good sense of humor? Likes Golf and/or College football and a nice cold brew? You're hired! Quantum Physics, Shuttle type...Meh, Next!

We don't dis on them no more after they took a stand last year. Now most "love" is between ENY and RPA, but mostly due to base swaps - they lost MIA, we lost NYC etc
Properly directed outrage is outrage upward at 1) the pilots who acquiesced to such outsourcing and 2) the management that asked for it.

Or, in short: "Not one more seat, pound, jet or job."

I remember back in the early days, there was a certain Southern jets airline based out of ATL who wore double breasted jackets and always wore their hats while walking down the terminal…smartly. My perception, and others confirmed, that many would seemingly make it a point to quickly look the other way, stare at their watch or do whatever it took to ignore us lowly “freight dawgs”. I could relay countless stories but it just doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Yes, it did hurt a little as I never quite understood this elitist attitude but after a while I stopped worrying about it.

Well, as they say…times have changed. Colleagues from that airline and many others now seem to go out of their way to approach me and ask about UPS, our contract and the IPA’s unity. Heck, even had a young Delta pilot on my jumpseat last night...nice guy, respectful and thankful for the ride. Seemed like a regular guy…not the primadonnas of the past. CASS members are always welcome to ride…happy to help.

My point is…don’t let this profession define who you are or how you treat folks. You’re not that special. Or, I should say..you are special, just like everyone else. It’s just a job at the end of the day. The only reason I’m here and someone else isn’t is simply because I got luckier than they did, not because I’m a better aviator or look good in a uniform (I don’t). We all do basically the same job and have to climb through and navigate the same obstacles and hurdles. Abide by the golden rule and be nice and thankful to people on the way up. Someday you made need their help on your way down. Enjoy the journey and appreciate your good fortune while taking time to help someone else.

Learn to laugh and have fun. This career and the friends you make are gone way too fast to worry about BS you can’t control.

It's just a job. We aren't special, and we aren't unique.

I'm at the point when people ask what I do, I tell them "I work in transportation" and try as hard as I can to change the topic of conversation and not tell them I fly. I hate being introduced to someone as "hey, this is my buddy Mikey, he's a pilot."

I have a deep respect for Spirit pilots based on your “clientele”. In the least offense and most PC, peace and love way possible, it must be difficult to deal with the lowest common denomination of the flying public every single day.

I think that's our flight attendants you have an admiration for; by the time a passenger issue comes up to the flight deck, it's "CRO, medics, gate agent or police, or some combination thereof," and they very much understand that those are the things that we are trained to obtain. That is to say, we are trained to reach for the microphone and VHF 2.

I really don't know how they do it, myself. Saint-like patience probably helps. Before 2020, and it's possible I had a charmed existence, the only pax-related stuff I had to deal with was medical emergencies. Later part of last year, we called the cops about once a trip—always someone being a mask-hole. We'll see how it goes between now and September. Finally did have to deplane the jet and have the constabulary escort someone off in the early part of this year; he got to enjoy the inside of a jail cell for a bit and probably faces some sort of enforcement action.

One thing we tend to NOT be shy about, and have never been shy about, here is telling people they cannot fly on us anymore.

Its getting to be that way at luv... about once a trip we have to have someone removed from the flight. Sometimes its definitely warranted, sometimes its a toss up and the SUP just had enough...

TWU's letters to LUV management have been...interesting to read, of late.

Sigh... that's literally (in the old sense of the word) not what happened.

I don’t know the exact details. I do recall there was a regional where the pilots voted in lower rates/concessions to gain more flying. I thought it was this case. IIRC it was one of these Eagle carriers (not the original Eagle).
