Oh Alaska/Boeing

Yeah, the backup flight I had listed us on to IAD went from 20+/infinite open seats a few hrs prior, to fully booked with a waiting list of revenue standbys thanks to a cancelled earlier IAD and also a BWI. I basically just told my wife to take the kids home......they weren't gonna get another non rev seat to DC for 2-3 days. It was my fault though, admittedly. The second I saw this pop up on the news Friday night, I should have realized what that was gonna mean for our plans today.
I am with my family on a certain mouse related trip in SoCal with no clue how we are getting back to AK. I’m really hoping this clears up in the next day or so.

Oh no, that's no bueno. I burned our PSTs to get home from there when we did it this fall. Couldn't take the stress, and the co-terminal/too many variables/can't pick a horse to ride aspect of it.

I did chuckle at the naivety of the gate agents today who were suggesting we first go to some random place like TX or AZ to try and circumnavigate the demand areas. Then they started talking about how the UW/Michigan game might make that a bad idea. And I just laughed thinking that my 5 year old would probably pop an emergency door open if he isn't on the ground in like 6 hours from that second. Or rip someone's scalp off. The kids have an expiration hour, and it doesn't jive with getting cute with multiple out of the way legs and such. But also, their system knowledge was below average. If I went to TX or AZ, the only way to get to the east coast would be back through SEA where we started, or LAX/SFO/SAN which wouldn't be any better :)

I remember getting jammed up getting back to Virginia once. I three legged it on company equipment and yea, it was an all day event.

Virginia Beach is where my finish line ends tomorrow, for a funeral. From the PNW, it is literally the worst trip you can imagine, if you tried to fly to Norfolk. We did the reverse so many times when we lived out there. It was always 3 legs, and always the worst day of travel possible.....and that was as a ticketed passenger. I can't even imagine doing it as a commuter.

😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 may the odds be ever in your favor.
It’ll work out eventually, fortunately I don’t have to be back for work soon.

Did they taxi to the gate after landing? Trying to decide what would be faster if you had reported injuries - taxi to a gate, or stop once clear of the runway and have them bring a stair truck?

Wonder how close that sucker came to hitting the horizontal stab? Yikes

In Portland, definitely a jetway. I still don't like being stopped on a taxiway with trucks around me unless I have to be there.

In the absence of any insider knowledge that I don’t possess, I would be firmly in the camp of “take it to the gate.” If you have multiple injuries, I’d surmise you would have better access to EMS at the gate than anywhere else. Also, trying to coordinate all that would be a nightmare, especially for a crew which was probably completely rattled. It would introduce many more threats than simply taxiing in.

Nightmare fuel

My vote would be stop on the runway, Inspection from ARFF. Then either tow to the gate or deplane via air stair.

What makes someone an “aviation expert?”

Here’s a Milpie who is an aerospace engineer, looks to be 0 121 time, but he can recall the Aloha and United hull blowouts leaving Hawaii.

I guess anyone can be an “aviation expert.”

Worth thinking about, especially when I see something like “counterterrorism expert” on CNN.

Or any other field for that matter.

It seems talking to whomever installed the plug has not occurred to this expert.

Just LOL, if you think someone must be a pilat to be an "aviation expert." What percentage do you think of all the people at your company that are needed to make your paycheck happen have logged 121 time? 15%-20%? Sure hope your company has more "aviation experts" than that!

Just a reminder to all the commuters out there. And I know this doesn't help with moving family. But UPS and Fedex are legit commuting options. I always bent over backwards for an offline pilot. Freight dawgs use offline jumpseasts easily 10 times more often than we reciprocate. I know it sucks being up all night but we can get you there. Well, maybe not to and from Alaska, but lots of other places.
