** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Thread

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

If you get a call for a class date before the end of this calendar year, consider yourself extremely lucky. Due to the cut numbers, 24 of EM's 100 facilities dropped their hiring numbers to 0. If that's the same across the country, then 25% of the applicants may not be seeing OKC for at least a year. All of this could change at any time, though, so if you get offered a redirect or anything related to getting you to OKC, your best advice is to take it, lest you be on hold until late 2010/early 2011.

Just to be clear, you're talking about people with TOLs in hand not getting to the Academy because their facilities simply don't have the room for them? Or do you just mean those facilities won't be offering any new candidates positions during that time?

Sounds like the first scenario, just want to be sure. I'm hoping ZAU isn't on that list, but one never knows. I'd assume the problem facilities are the smaller ones that aren't really equiped to handle many trainees to begin with.

There is already a lack of room for trainees at several facilities, but that's not why we are getting pushed back. There is a double-edged sword in play here: the FAA wanted to hire more people, and NATCA fought for more money for the existing controllers. The government said, "Okay, here's your set dollar amount for the year, which will cover salaries and training." Where do you think the money for training went? A lot of it went to the current controllers in the form of pay raises. I am definitely not upset about that, but it is upsetting that the FAA has been trying to add more controllers but neglected to have that included in the budget as well. Because of this, in many facilities, no one will be given an FOL because there is no money for them. Again, this changes all the time, such as people that get to training and decide it's not for them, or people that wash out, or people that decide to up and retire in the middle of the year. For those that are currently set to go to a facility that has a big fat "0" in the hiring numbers for the next FY, I feel you... I'm in the same situation.

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

For what it adds to the big picture... I spoke to my rep and she told me that I had a December 4th class date. I asked her if she knew what might have happened for my class date to change from September 17th to October 6th to December 4th. She said "priority" and that they had to get the people in whose clearances were near expiration. Accordingly, she said there are VRA's who get seniority, as well as OTS that actually applied before PUBNAT1 (which I applied for).

Needless to say I accepted that date.

ZHU, for those who care.

Good luck everyone.

That is correct. It is typically done in TOL order, but if, say, I got my TOL a month after you but had my clearances back before you, then I get moved ahead of you because it is more expensive to send someone back through all of the screenings (medical, psych, etc.) than to keep you waiting a few more months. They'll do everything they can to get you into your/a facility before your medical expires.

I wonder if they will be notifying the people who are slated to go to facilities with no spots for the year, or if they will just keep us guessing. My money is on the second of the two...

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

Pay attention to the way your rep phrases things, if you can get a response at all. I was slated for LAX and I was called by my rep (R.A.) and he stated there was a 0 hiring quota for this coming fiscal year. I was given the option of EUG instead and took it.
I found out a few days later from a controller at LAX that they requested no more OTS/CTI grads straight from the academy because of the huge wash out rate (nearly 100% I was told). I almost took the option of waiting another year and if I did, chances are I wouldn't get into LAX then either because they don't even want me w/o any experience for who knows how long.
My suggestion: If you get a call from your rep and they say there's a 0 hiring quota, they offer you something else, and you're considering waiting another year, ask why. It could be that your facility doesn't want you w/o experience rather than an "all full up" staffing issue. It almost cost me another year or more of waiting. Best of luck all!

well if HR tries to redirect you for any reason you should take it.

i told E.M. straight up that i'd take anything they'd throw my way, including guam. sure i'd be stuck in a seriously undesireable place for 2 or 3 years but at least i'd be CPC and able to go anywhere else i want.

the other plus is that if your asked to go somewhere else, your garuntee'd a speedy FOL because obviously they need people there.

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

So if you take the offered swap, should you feel relatively comfortable that you will be getting that slot for FY10?

Yeah, I was seriously considering taking the switch they offered me, but was worried about being able to transfer back to somewhere "desirable" in a timely fashion. I still have never found a good answer to the question "How long does it take to get a transfer to your desired facility if you CPC in an alternate location?"

If I could be sure that I would be able to move back home after 2-3 years, I would be more inclined to accept another location. But I have heard horror stories about people who did just that and are still waiting for transfers 10 years down the road...

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

I hope we hear something soon too, but don't hold your breath! You might die!

Re: ** Official "Slated for Next Fiscal Year (Oct. 2009)" Th

The waiting is hard. My HR rep seems to be ignoring all of my emails and phone calls. Probably because she doesn't have any answers for me.

ya i also got news that it takes 2.5 years to check out there because of the CPC : Trainee ratio.

but hell, all i need is brews, ladies, and tunes to function correctly. and from what i hear SHV has all 3 and nothing else.
