NWA service to Ellsworth AFB?

when i was a student pilot coming back from a trip to the practice area(pre-adiz days) i called up tower 10 miles out(dme off of the gps) and was tracking in to the airport. well, i made visual of the field....only it wasnt hef...it was Dulles. i passed th eextended centerline and tower told me i could turn final now. very confused i looked around and saw hef abeam my right wing. not sure how i botched that one but had i set up on a final to dulles(15miles to the N) i think the end result would have been slightly different. i landed, uneventfully....and learned a valuable lesson. that was as a student pilot....how does a line pilot pull a stunt like that.

Hey Doug did you think that you were at the wrong airport the first time you landed at KVPS? Must be interesting seeing all of those fighters there.

Oddly enough on my x-county flight for my PPL I flew from TUS-E63.

But... began lining up for final at GBN...a military base. I'm sure MikeD knows all about KGBN.

Guess I was on the wrong frequency and E63 is a smaller airport but GBN is larger and quite visible from the air and I think there runways at both airports are the same magnetically.

Had I not seen an F-16 off to my right in the far distance I prolly would have landed and had quite a surprise waiting for me.

On a side note I was very fortunate at that time to not get an F-16 military escort.

Have spent much time at GBN, both in the air and on the ground on and off range.

Problem is, E63 is Rwy 5-23, while GBN is 17-35. You're fired mister.

Thats too funny man. I could see that happening a bit too when they clear you for a visual and you think you have the airport but then don't. Hehehe

I once lined up on downwind for Miramar and thought it was Montgomery field in San Diego. It was one of my first flights as a new Private! Hahaha. All I was looking for was two runways with one going diagnally across it. Well, they were both like that and only a few miles apart.

I finally realized it when the Montgomery tower called and said I was on downwind for the military base. Oooooooopss!

Then there was that time.....hehehe..

Yeah, Skywest asked me about that one, but I told them it wasn't your fault since you were new.

They said that's cool.

For some pilots, calling the 'visual' is a sort of macho thing. Personally, I'm a big scardey cat and won't accept a visual until I'm willing to bet my career that it's the correct airport, it matches the Nav display and I'm 105% sure.

No doubt. Don't call the airport unless you absolutely have it in sight. If this was an Airbus I'm thinking they could have backed it up on the FMS. You can always check for the LOC frequency or if you have a GPS, use it. Could the FMS display on their Airbus tell you if you're landing at the wrong airport?

Macon is another bad airport for that... less than 3 miles away is Warner Robbins Airforce base, with a very simular runway alignment... you gotta pay attention.

On a different topic, Ed, I find myself lusting over your avatar, and then I remember it is you... you are going to have to do something about that

LOL.....well like I said I was still a student pilot at the time so I have an excuse. If you'll buy that.

wait, why did they land at an Air force base? was it an emergence, or they were basically lost? what type of navigation systems does NWA airlink use?

Wasn't an Airlink flight...

I'm flying on NWA today from PHX-DTW. Maybe our pilots will get cornfuzed and take me somewhere rather nice.

I am sure fatigue may have played--- Not in the air but Last year when i was at Delta, we had a crew dancing around for more than 10 minutes to find their gate. For those of you not familiar with SJC (Doug you know it well), it is a small airport and really impossible to get lost. I went to the cockpit and and i talked to the pilots, and they were both laughing and said they were very tired. Long days are bad but NWA pilots should have used all their resources. They will be retraining coming up soon and their may be some E6B training too

Ohhhhhhh your lucky...I work in Tempe for Chase. And see NWA flights flying over all the time.

Were you lucky enough to have traveled from PHX-DTW ona NWA 757-300?

I was driving home the other day on SR143 and one of those NWA 757-300's was landing on rwy. 08 and flew over my car....man those things are freakin long

Actually it was an NWA A320. Pretty nice, but I was dissapointed about the lack of in-flight entertainment.

Ohhh, that's a smooth, quiet ride! If Boeing could figure out how to do that, they'd never have a problem in the world!!!
