Anybody work for the NTSB or know somebody who does? I've always been interested in what a day in the life is like for one of these guys. Seems like an extremely difficult field to get into as well.

Don't work for them, but have worked _with_ them for many years, know quite a few of them.

I also know a couple former, and current, investigators. There is a great deal of tedium involved in the work. Although, I know the NTSB is trying to reduce their operating costs so a great deal of the work is done from home. So, all in all, it's not too shabby of a job.

Interned there while I was in college. Excellent experience, would highly recommend it to everyone. You spend a ton of time on the phone. A ton of time doing paperwork, but when you go in the field with them you get exposed to ALOT of very interesting things.

I would love to do that internship, but unfortunately I already graduated and am therefore ineligible. Maybe it's a sign I should go back to school....

As you gain experience you find that the most interesting aspects are sorted out AFTER the field investigation. The field investigation is mostly just documenting and finding everything you need to do the real work.

Do you know what their backgrounds were?

In the office I was at there were four investigators and the boss. Three of the investigators all had military background, crewcheifs i believe (we're going back a few years). The fourth was a MX guru, nonmilitary background. They were all older gentlemen that have been around the "aviation block" so to speak.
