Now that my airline is reaching the 21st Century...

Sorry, don't buy many of those excuses. 5 1/2 years of regional flying, been there, done that. Managed to survive and compete in marathons during that time without having to drag the grocery store with me. Still ate healthy.

Guess I'm just from a different time.

I'm curious how you did that. Not doubting it but what, where, how much were you eating and how much did you budget for?

The best I can do is $25-$30 per day of a trip. I have tried to do less and I'm a grumpy SOB from being hungry. When I pack I can do a 4 day for about $30 total and that's eating chicken, steaks, veggies etc.

I could do way cheaper when I freezer cook for the months and take along my pre portioned lunches and dinners etc. When I do that my total food bill is less than $200.

Free breakfast at the hotel, load up with fruit, yogurt and muffins for lunch. Use daily allowance for sick bone in ribeye and Jameson for dinner. What's the problem?
Edit-elliptical at some point in the day, but no guarantee.

Honestly, I didn't budget for food. Still don't. I eat when I am hungry. Drink when I am thirsty. Sleep when I am tired. Work out when I have time and inclination. Granted, it has become harder to do since having kids, but it's still doable.

I understand it's hard to convey emotion via the internet, but it comes off that you think you're above those who bring food with them. Does it bother you? We don't all have to live our lives exactly the same way you do.

Oh how quickly you forget...

Regional pay (and per diem), especially in the early years, doesn't lend itself to airport food prices, even with the vaunted 20% discount.

Regional terminals often don't have the same food options the mainline gates do.

Regionals spend some time (strangely) at regional airports, where there are no food options.

Regionals often are doing multiple legs a day with very short turn times that don't allow for time to run inside to get food, even if there is something in side.

Regional crews often stay at crappy hotels in the middle of nowhere with no viable food options near by, especially at the time they get or leave.

EDIT: And outside of SFO Terminal 2 there are very few airport food options that are truly healthy.

This is why regional pilots are dangerous, unsafe, and should not be trusted.

Wasn't this thread about bags originally?

I switched to a Brightline Flex B7 bag (actually an earlier version of it from 2013) which my parents had bought me as a Christmas gift that year. It sat in the closet for about 2.5 years before I had a chance to put it to use once I was able to get rid of the Jepp binders. Love it.

And with the Flex system, I can add other components. Some of them have padding which does provide some insulation, but it's not really a food bag.

But I'm very happy with it.

I've never really understood the camping trip cooler thing... never did it at the regionals, nor now that I'm a mainline skygod looking down on all those below my tier 1 status.

I didn't care about short turn times with 5 legs a day... heck we do that now on mini-fifi here and there. If I was hungry, I got food. That was on them if me grabbing something to eat delayed the flight in the hub turn (I just grabbed it and then ate it in flight). I held that philosophy from the get go, and almost all my peers at light-chop-jets regardless of airline background hold similar. 25 minute turn with a plane change after flying a transcon? Yup. Getting food, and I can always find something at least reasonably healthy.

Only sometimes would I pack a school-like lunch if I was flying a 5 hour turn or something similar.

To each their own... dad would always pack his bran stuff for his trips.

I need a good EFB bag. Preferably, it would hold my iPad, 17" laptop, clarity aloft headset, and three days or so of my non perishable food. I'd also like to use my crew outfitter's allowance on it as well. Any suggestions?

No, doesn't bother me, just curious. Seems every FO is now doing it. Figured I missed the memo. Wanna bring a lunchbox to work, knock yourself out.

It's about saving money. It's not even remotely convenient and frankly, it's a pain in the ass to pack food like I'm camping before going on the road. But it's half the cost of buying food and every cent counts for me on regional pay right now. Can't wait till I can afford to not worry about it.

Hmm, I do it out of peer pressure because I don't want to have the image fo being an unhealthy fatass who eats airport food 15 times per week.

/S.

Kind of.

By hauling all that junk you still have to carry a big bag anyways. Can someone post a meme from platoon where willam de foe tells Charlie
Sheen he's hauling to much schtuff??

Also, airport sandwiches generally suck. The bread is either hard or soggy. I'd much prefer to take some lunch meat and lettuce separated from the bread and some of that tasty sweet mustard with a weird name I cannot remember :)

Yeah, I'd like to ditch the laptop but that whole going to school full time while flying full time gets in the way of that.

For me it's about being healthy and not being an old, angry fat man like most of you are. Wanna be fat, knock yourself out.

I think he and I are just curious about the camping trip thing. I'm in the best shape of my life at 35, and it sounds like the guy you're responding to hardly fits that bill either. It's more about staying active and portion control than eating weird foo foo stuff.

Who said they're packing enough for a camping trip? And who cares what someone else does? I could care less what you or he does, good for both of you.
