NOTICE TO; San Jose Aviation Alumni-N7015U No More

What a shame to see that B727 get destroyed. As far as attracting more cargo- i don't know how they can do that when you have an airport that is noise sensitive! Cargo carriers will not deal with SJC's noise curfew- they would rather go to OAK.

Most cargo happens during the 7 to 8:00 hour here anyway.

It's more the fact that San Jose is in decline since the end of the tech boom. It's not a drastic decline, but things definitely aren't what they once were. Anyway, the airport has tons of plans but passenger traffic is a shadow of its former self. I think the only international flight left is Mexicana, and that probably doesn't count. ;)

Yeah noise sensitive airports are a PITA, to deal with especially when trying to get waivers etc. I would wager to say the majority of airfreight is moved in the US at night. Toronto (CYYZ) is another noise sensitive airport that is way too easy to get violated at.

So does SJSU still have an aviation department/major? I thought about going there but decided to stay local and went to the only other uni in the Cal State system with an aviation dept-CSULA

Yeah, it does. The department has moved partially on campus and partially to Reid Hillview airport in east San Jose.

I'd call it a drastic decline.

Mid-late 90s: Huge Reno Air hub. Big American/American Eagle hub. Big Alaska/Horizon focus city. International flights to YOW(Air Canada), YVR(Canadian), CDG, NRT, TPE(all AA), MEX, and GDL(Mexicana).

Now: American serves DFW and ORD, Eagle serves LAX. That's it. Still a focus city for Alaska/Horizon, but most cities aren't served more than once or twice a day. Only a hand-full of airlines remain. Volaris/Mexicana serve GDL, the only international city.

Such a shame.

You don't have to take your clothes off....

You are aware of how human anatomy works right? ("Insert flange A into recepticle 1C....?") Helps if you take off the wrapping your construction tools arrive in....

(Yes, I'm aware not all clothes have to come off....but that ruins my joke....)

Sad to see an airliner tore up...I remember watching Honeywell's 707 get eaten up here in PHX a year or so ago...sad stuff.

The aviation building now has a construction fence around it. Some heavy equipment parked next to it. It wont be long till its all an empty lot. So sad.:(

It is and it isn't

I wont have anywhere to go back to and reminisce like so many of the older alums that I met in my time there. But on the other hand, I think we're in a better place for the future students now.

The fact is, when they shut down the A&P program (I was its last graduate), the building became obsolete. It didn't have the right kind of space you'd need for anything other than an A&P program, it cost a fortune to heat and keep the lights on, and because it was segregated from the main campus it was easy for the administration to see how much it was costing them. (how much does the wood shop cost us... well, who knows? it's indistinguishable from the rest of the art building on the power bill)

The new facility at RHV is more sane in size, has options to expand in the future, is newer, and has central air and heat and INSULATION!

The university is the enemy, its been that way the entire time I've been there, and that's sad. Within the department the administration is improving a huge amount.

The College of Engineering, however, seems to hate us, tries everything they can to send our funding to other programs, and the University policies regarding tenure track are hobbling us. We have a grand total of two full time faculty and a constant stream of adjunct faculty who teach one or two classes for a few years and then move on either because they have no chance to become tenured and adjunct pay scales, frankly, suck. The previous administration drove off several excellent tenure track teachers for different reasons, and then refused to even offer them part time work.

Worse than all that, there's no focus to the program. It's a smattering of loosely related classes and some that are just ridiculous and it has an enormous unit count and no one seems to be interested in changing that.

I hope that now the facility move is done that the above changes for the better.

Sometimes I wish I had gone to Riddle or UND, it's expensive but it's probably worth it... but sometimes I like being the underdog ;)

Sounds similar to CSULAs program although we didn't have an A&P program. Hell CSULA isn't anywhere near an airport but that is what field trips are for. I had a great time at CSULA and made some good friends.
