Not clean shaven

No. It's really not.

According to which standards? Does it really has to do with being professional or is it just to not affect the performance of the oxygen mask?

Being a pilot it`s just a profession like any other, in other fields it is ok to have 3-5 days of growth. I see plenty of very successful and professional individuals that have one. In the second scenario I really don`t see a huge difference in performance, I have had to wear and ABC gas mask in the military all the time, we had guys with a full beard and they would all pass the Banana Oil test.

Now what really matters, is keeping the beard trimmed, have good hygiene, an healthy look and especially know how to wear your clothes. I see plenty clean shaved that can`t properly wear work clothes, especially pilots, I dunno I think they still have tailors this days, don`t they?

No, nothing to do with the oxygen mask. That may have been true with the old masks, but modern masks have no problems sealing around beards. No, it's just the fact that having a bunch of stubble looks unprofessional. Not just in the piloting profession, but in just about any profession. If you're a hipster 20-something working for a tech startup, then by all means, wear your stubble. Otherwise, shave like an adult.

Just follow what is written on the damn company manual. I get paid good money to wear a uniform and have a clean shaven face. If your company requires a week old beard, flipflops, and axe body spray, then do it or find somewhere else for employment.

Grow a beard like an adult. See, others can just type differing opinions and the world moves on. Shave or don't shave, do what you have to do to stay employed.

I look at this the same way I look at the "do I need to wear a blue or charcoal suit to an interview" question: there are some employers who won't hire you or keep you employed if you don't shave, but there aren't employers who will refuse to hire you or keep you employed if you do shave. You know, unless you're looking for a job at Beard Grooming Emporium or something. So, simple decision. I can tell you without a doubt that if someone walked into my company for an interview and had two days worth of stubble on his face, he's being shown the door before the first question is asked.

Completely agree. I wasn't factoring in the job interview into the equation. By all means, a clean shaven look is a must for job seekers.

I totally agree, of course if you decide to work for somebody you have to follow his guidelines, but his guidelines are based on his personal standards, what I don`t agree with is that it is supposed to be an universal statement, especially in this century. If I`m required by company regulation I will just follow that.

I work for an airline, yeah I fly the bottom feeder planes for them, but nobody pointed out the beard on my face when I showed up for the interview, they just saw somebody of clean appearance that according to his documented experience and what they gather in the interview can do the job just fine, I`m probably the only one at my company with a beard, but nobody ever said anything...

I'd be more tempted to grow the man-beard if it didn't make me look like a cross between a teenager who hadn't shaved for months and an Orthodox Rabbi. I believe "spotty" is the apposite term.

Damn.

This is hilariously awkward.

When I met you last year, I thought you were, in fact, an Orthodox Rabbi. I kept trying to to direct your attention away from Gonzo when he was doing religiously 'unclean' things. Had I have known, I would have shown you the "JC Staff-Only" crustacean appetizer tray we were all snacking on.

My bad!

I had a friend a while back interview at Skywest. He had a trimmed up beard, and they said "You know we expected for an airline interview you would be clean shaven." Besides that hick up he still got the job.

Pop up trip sub 2hr call out at 6am this morning.

This thread inspired me to go flying with a days growth.

Saved me 5 precious minutes.

Thanks JC!

With the long list of diseases my passengers are infected with, I'm allowing nothing which could compromise the seal on my N95. You want some TB in your facial hair?
