Nominations for best Controllers

[ QUOTE ]
FlyChicaga might be able to back me up on this, but (usually) late at night in TOL there's a lady who always responds with "cool" instead of copy or rodger or whatnot. Makes it interesting when you're flying late.

That's pretty cool. It reminds me of one of the cool controllers here at GFK that once gave a student a wrong runway assigment, and the student asked him to reconfirm the assigment. The controller responded with, "oh did I say that? My bad!"

A fellow CFI and I were giving each other BFR's in a warrior at Vero Beach, it was a slow Sunday afternoon and we asked the tower to judge our landings for us based on smoothness of touchdown and closest to the 1000 foot marker without landing short of it. It was on a scale of one to ten and it was a blast. The tower got into it, he even got the ground controller and someone else involved in the judging.

I won. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

GFK does have some good guys.

Let me do the entire circuit this summer, wind was light and variable and I was the only one out, hit all 6 runways...good times.

At Addison airport in Dallas there was a lady controller that used to give the ATIS as if it was a phone sex line, she spoke so seductively, one of my instructors got mad and said it was unprofessional, another one liked it. I thought it was quite humorous! Anybody else know this lady? She used to do ground and tower also, but nothing matched the ATIS!

Other notables are the "ya'll have a nice rest of the day" lady in Jacksonville and the "A-D ohh's (adios)" guy at ABQ center.

What about the controller in Jax that always says Aloha, i think they call him Aloha Bob. anyone hear of him?

That girl is awesome! I haven't heard her in a couple years (don't spend much time in that airspace) but I loved the "cooool" thing!

There is a guy who works CMH approach who has a total radio DJ voice, and I heard thru the grapevine that he actually used to do radio DJ/voiceovers and such.

And...any controller who takes the time to talk to you about your plane while you're taxiing is pretty cool in my book!

I ran into her the other night on an IFR XC. She was awsome! GRR is pretty cool, too. However, the Minneapolis Center guy that was covering Northern Michigan the other night was a grump. Dead quiet on the freq, but he was brusque, hurried and unhappy sounding. Oh well . . .

What about 'Bubbles' in Phoenix Tower? She always lights up the frequency whenever she is controlling.

I vote for Elmer Fudd on NORCAL approach, he sounds exactly like elmer fudd, but gets the job done.

"Turn wight heading twee-twee zero, incept da waskaly wabbit"

That I wanna hear. Some day!

MSP center is always dead over northern Michigan. Anything north of GRR (or MBS on my side of the state where I did my training) always meant that you didn't have radar coverage below 5,000' so things usually got quiet for us when we headed up towards TVC. The few times we did manage to get MSP to pick us up though, we might as have had just stayed on 122.80 'cause there wasn't anything going on...ever.

Heh, makes me laugh, because I was thinking of the cool controllers around, and that Fudd guy was one of them.

But, I'll have to agree, FAT has some of the phattest controllers out there.

For towers, I also like San Jose (SJC).

Salinas (SNS) is also great. Not very busy there, and on leaving of arriving, there is always a "and YOOOOOOOU have a nice day, come back soon" or something like that thrown in. Only thing good about that place actually is the controllers. That, and the airshow there this weekend, that has the Blues and the Snowbirds (but I'll be working in a PA38 about 10 miles away from the show /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif )

Has the tower guy at Moffett (NUQ) mention to me the other day, "hey, don't hear a lot of Tomahawks flying around this area." And commented how he liked flying them.

Hate to be a homer but I've gotta nominate AUS tracon.

Never had them turn down a practice instrument approach even when they're super busy, they're understanding and have kept a cool head in some pretty bad situations and are super-helpful when trying to teach a new student pilot to work the radios.

I've heard her a few times, it blew ( no pun intended ), my mind the first time I heard her. Absolutely funny.

It gets a little more interesting up there when it's IFR conditions. Non-radar approaches going on at all the airports in the area can make things a little more interesting for everyone.

All the controllers at GFK (that I've seen) are really awesome. Anybody who can handle that many planes (many of them students who dont quite know what's goin on yet) and not start spouting off profanities into the mic is ok in my book. Always do a great job giving us VFR traffic advisories even though they dont have to.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, the controllers at GFK are all pretty cool and seem really understanding especially considering the high volume of student traffic. Sometimes when its really busy the approach/departure controllers can get a little cranky tho.

It's only 10 min. away and I've only flown there once. Guess I'll have to go more often. I've heard they have two lady controllers that work in that tower and people will fly in and ask "Is this a manned tower today?"
