NOAA changes

You only need to worry if Jim Cantore is the dispatcher on the release.

Ungh.

It’s been supremely silent from people who thought this administration was a good idea. I’d love to see a cogent argument about slashing NOAA funding.

Of course they’re going for the Department of Education because its purpose is to make sure everyone is educated, not just wealthy or ‘socioeconomically fortunate’ children so we won’t see kids who think you can’t stand on the equator or that some divine entity pushes the sun around the Earth for another ten years.

But we get our asses kicked from the weather annually and if they’re going to ‘Flight Service Station” climate and weather research and reporting, I have bad news.

If course they want to privatize the NOAA. It's not even a Trump move. It's a conservative move. He is just the vehicle to get it done for them. The conservatives are looking to profit off of all the government entities that they've cut. They've already been doing it with the public school system via these charter schools.

And yes...you can expect the service to be crappy.

So It’ll be done in the style of Richie Lengel?

If it all makes a few people take this course, some good will be done…

If someone was supplying a competing forecast product that was demonstrably better, it would be a different situation. And I would be all for the "Jepp" brand TAFs and METARs to be something I could buy instead. But that's not where we are, at all.

WSI will happily sell you that data, but I doubt it's cheap.

Recall that those •lords at AccuWeather have been trying to get NOAA's functions privatized for a long time.

I worry what might happen if DOGE breaks weather forecasting and climate research.

Beyond the obvious safety issues, there is a reason that NOAA is part of the Department of Commerce (now Lutnick's purview). It is because weather and climate and logistics and such in air, sea, and overland (trucking, railroads) as well as agriculture are all kind of important to "economy" and "business". Two areas the USA leads - military and a global economic hegemony. And these idiots (with the support of useful idiots - some of whom we have examples of here on this interwebs application) are working actively to dismantle it. It's almost like our worst enemies have been able to dictate our future path or something. Oh well, gotta try to squeeze in another watch of The Manchurian Candidate before the big game...off I go!

It's an older book but Michael Lewis' The Fifth Risk is an excellent read and talks about what Accuweather wants to do to the NWS.
