Isn't this the sort of thing you'd find a fourth year Aeroengineer creating for a midsemester class project because he wants to play more Fallout 4 rather than do some hard math? I think you can trace most bad ideas from engineers to release dates of monumental video games.

Airbus files patents on hundreds of outrageous design concepts every year and none of them ever go to production. But they always seem to become quickie news items to fill time on the major networks, where aviation pseudo-experts get a minute or two on The Morning Edition to talk about Airbus. Isn't that convenient...

These patents, these "great ideas," are phenomenal. They're so great, that a company will patent them and lock the idea away in a safe so no one in their sane minds will attempt such a retarded design.

The Wright Brothers didn't just roll out the final version of the Flyer at Kitty Hawk. It was the result of years of experimenting and developing. No doubt they came up with many ideas that never saw the light of day. That's how R&D works. You come up with an idea. Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. But the failure inspires new ideas, until, eventually it does work. We remember Thomas Edison because of his 1000th attempt, not the 999 that came before.
