No deadheading in the jumpseat... at all?

This is one of the many reasons why I will not occupy the jumpseat when deadheading. The ONLY way I will occupy a jumpseat is if I am absolutely certain that it'll get a non-cockpit-eligible flight attendant or non-rev on the flight.

This.

Not to mention the jumpseat is so horribly uncomfortable that I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...like you said gate agents are shady so I only do it if I know that I'm not screwing somebody else

Need to jumpseat on full-size airplanes. The JS on the L-1011, DC-10, and 747s were comfy.

Nah. Regionals are the new domestic mainline. :D

Sadly, this becomes more true all the time. Thanks, mainline types for negotiating away scope for a pipe dream pension/ pay raise!

So, guess we're stuck in those pesky Dash-8/ RJ jumpseats after all. :(

Or heaven forbid the saab jumpseat

Gosh this thread hit close to home today- I was heading to MEM as a deadhead, and an FA/friend was trying to get home on the same flight. I offered to take the J/S, but the captain was obviously not cool with it. The gate agent did not help by trying to "peer pressure" him into accepting me either, kind of ruining my plan of dinner/drinks in MEM later on when we got there. But then again, I do see where the captain was coming from.

Union says you're not supposed to do it, but I'm fine with giving up a seat in the back on a deadhead AS LONG AS:

1. I'm not inconveniencing an actual jumpseater.
2. I can help a standby passenger out.
3. The Captain's OK with it.

True story: A few weeks ago when I was fresh off IOE on the E145, I get a call from a Captain who says that his girlfriend is trying to fly standby on a flight I'm deadheading on. He asked if I was willing to give my seat up in the back to get her on. I told him "no problem!" I found his girlfriend in the terminal, and she was apparently filled in on the situation. Nice girl, we chatted for a bit while they were boarding. She took her (my) seat, and I hung around the front. I ended up not having to take the jumpseat since there were 2 no-shows but I still felt good that I offered and she was getting on regardless. Captain says he still owes me dinner for it.

Case by case basis in my book.

And really, I think any pilot group's union is okay with that list and that type of thing, too.

It's just important for gate agents to know that a pilot should never be expected to sit in the jumpseat. Especially if it might be the only time for a nice 45 minute nap in the middle of a 14 hour day that start before dawn.

If there isnt a seat in the back of the Saab empty, unless you have quite a few kids, the possibility of riding up front is probably out of the window anyway.
Just the other day I had 18 kids on board.... Some sort of field trip I suppose... And actually needed the jumpseater in the jumpseat to get within CG... First and probably the last time that will ever happen to me in the saab.
