Maybe he didn't have enough fuel to make it to another airport

Go around at the same airport then.

By the way....I met this Stan guy once at BFI at northeast parking...8 years ago. He had an unpainted Mooney. I thought he was really wierd and decided not to help him with getting his IFR ticket.

Wow, that is a cool site, thanks for the post.

I wonder how tall those trees are, and how close they were to the runway???

Some very un-educated PIC decision there, if that would be the case....I wouldn't even attempt to land there with that much shearing

Runway 34 Obstructions -

20 ft. tree, 200 ft. from runway, 50 ft. left of centerline
+6'-20' BRUSH 0'-200' FM THR, 71' R & 110' L.

There is a strip at the south end of Whidbey Island, called, South Whidbey...strip....or something or other. I believe that's where this is...I landed there once in a 172, somewhat more successfully than this guy...

We don't have the facts of that flight to determine whether or not the PIC made an "uneducated decision". For example, maybe he had enough fuel for an alternate, maybe he didn't...

With the slight chance of a fuel issue, the pilot should have had alternates, and I do not see any fuel on the field(just my obsevations)

I guess I can't bring my 777 in there, Oh Well

A few things.

This is a 2,400' runway. That should be enough to get a Mooney in and out of. Yeah it's narrow, and yeah it has obstructions but if you plan things out correctly it shouldn't be an issue. He very obviously was hot and high on his final approach, and he should have put the power in. Simply put, this guy made a bad decision and almost bent his plane in the process. In addition to landing on like the last third of the runway, he locked his brakes up and it looks like he started to skid sideways. In my guesswork, that kind of sideload could colapse his gear and he'd be in a world of hurt at that point. That's not even to speak of crashing headlong into those tree's doing 30 knots. There are no airbags in Mooney's.

Now with the issue of fuel. If he had that little fuel onboard, then that's some piss poor planning on his part. I don't know who in their right mind would try to land with that little fuel to the point that you couldn't put the power in and go around. But with the decisions this guy seems to be prone to making, I would guess that he wouldn't plan on something like that.

Careless and reckless operation if you ask me.

Cheers
