Hey all
Well it looks like ill be attending UND next year, if all goes as planned, and will be doing the Commercial Aviation program. I'll be starting Fall 2008, and i cant wait. Does anyone have any tips for me, or anything. Im jsut curious and want to learn as much as i can. I do have a question, what other degree options get you all your ratings but is something other then commercial aviation? thanks

Hey awesome, and welcome! You can take a look at the current Academic Catalog, it has a lot of useful information. http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/registrar/catalogs/catalog/index.htm

Some people take Aviation Management instead of the Commercial Aviation as it provides more backup. Personally I just switched from Avit. Managment to a full business degree, since I feel it provides more in depth learning and it still has the same courses as Avit. Management and it is something I want to do later on, just going to double major. It's all up to you really, you just have to get something that you will enjoy, if you take something you really don't enjoy it is going to be a very long four years. Others have double majored in Meteorology as well. Aviation Management and Commercial Aviation are probaly the most common ones. You can always double major too. If you stick to it hard, and don't have any hard job commitments you might be able to graduate in 4 years with double major.

Just come with an open mind and positive attitude and you will be fine.

Also I came in the summer (2007) and it was a great decision that I really recommend. I would definitely do it again. Since you have your Private you could take Avit 112 in the summer. You meet a lot of new people in the summer that you usually remain good friends with. I thought it would be a waste and really boring but I enjoyed summer a lot here, it's pretty nice so that might be an option. If you do that you can go to 221 in the fall and get going on the flying.

Good luck and hope to see you around here soon. :D

Edit- Aviation Management takes you thru Multiengine, it does not get your CFI so if you want to do that you'd have to do it seperately.

hey, thanks for the reply. Hmm the summer course really interests me, id liek to do that actually. What is the process like if you come in with a PPL, and that was done at a part 61 school?? So if i came in the summer, id be able to start on my IFR in the fall, BTW, id be coming in as a transfer student, with one year and a half of college under my belt.

You'd be doing 112 in the summer, the private pilot equivalent course to get you into "UND Standards" and to get your familiar with UND procedures and regulations. It's pretty painless, just very redundant and very annoying from what I've heard from others, just because you go over stuff you already know. It's only about 16 lessons (guessing?) so it is half of the whole private pilot but you would still need to take it. After you finish Avit 112 then you would take 221 (which is the Basic Instrument Flying course), it gets you familiar with instrument flying and gets you started thinking in IFR rather then VFR. Avit 222 is the fun one, where you actually start learning instrument procedures and regulations and start flying IFR. You can always do a couple instrument approaches and do some IFR flying in 221 as well, depending on your instructor.

Overall Avit 112 is just 1 or 2 XC's and just private pilot stuff. Simple course. Also personally I'd take 103 (Intro to ATC) in the summer. I did not find 102 and 103 very difficult in the summer, personally I'd take another course along with it if I could go back. I had PLENTY of relax and have fun time in the summer with 102 and 103, and 112 is a lot shorter then 102.

It's only about 16 << Supposed to be 14, but you may incomplete many lessons, to work on things you've done a million times already>> lessons (guessing?)
so it is half of the whole private pilot but you would still need to take it.

Do avit 112 in the summer. It seriously sucks in the fall. There is another course (105) which is like 112 for students who haven't taken their PPL checkride. Don't do 105. Make sure you take your PPL checkride before you come to UND.

Do take 103 in the summer. It's easy and fun.

Welcome to UND!

alright pefect. How many summer sessions are there?? 1 or 2. Ill get over there in a month or 2 and meet with someone to figure it all out. Im so excited, i wish it was here already. What housing options do i have for summer, im gonna go read the und site more carefully. thanks again!

There are 2 sessions. I don't know about this but you might actually be able to do 112 and 221 in the summer. They are both pretty quick courses to finish. I'm not sure though, just a thought. It would be sweet through because you could get going on 222, where the real fun begins.

Housing they have dorms, we had Noran last summer, we just had one building for all the summer term people. It's either dorms, university apartments, or off campus. Are you going to be coming with a car?

I just made it all happen through the phone, you can talk to Amy Sand. It's actually pretty painless to get registered for summer. If you are coming to check it out and are gonna get it all done in person let me know when your coming and I'll be glad to give you a ride from the airport if you need it.

Pefect, thankyou so much for your help!! When i get more information ill get back to you. thanks

Tommy

102/105/112 all take the same ground school and in the summer they are all 9 weeks I believe. So even though 112 has less flight lessons you will have to take the 9 week ground school.

I think I may have told you wrong, that was the way 102/105/112 was done when I went through. Looking at last summers course schedule it was impossible to take both 112 and 221 in the same summer because all the private pilot courses didn't get out until Aug 3.

i feel sorry for you, i am just finishing up my last semester. cant wait to get out of GF

If your are going to make a comment like that, please explain yourself. We don't need that kind of negative attitude in a topic where the original poster is excited to come here.

lol.......if you have someone explain themselves why they don't like GFK, this topic will go for 10 pages. We have plenty of them. Now now...don't get me started! :p

I dont think its negative, more like honest. Sorry i am not a midwest boy, therefore GF was not a good fit for me. I did not want to shell out $50K+/yr at embry to get my training. I enjoyed the training, met some cool ppl, but overall i missed out on a REAL college experience.

Here we go again :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

We've got the makings of a classic UND forum bitchfest thread. 112/105 complaints, GF sucks, etc. All we need now is a car reference. :banghead:

Man.....in a few years, I'd like to get an S2000!

Huh... Besides flying, I still took courses other than aviation related stuff, did stuff on campus, went to hockey games, made some of my best friends there, lived in the dorms for a bit, studied for finals like mad, and everything else that would be at a "real' college...

what'd I miss?! :sarcasm:
