New Initiative?

Howdy all,

Recently, I was flying towards MSP bravo airspace with some passengers. I figured that asking for 'over-the-top' of the MSP field was the most scenic. The controller cleared it, and we had our nice scenic view of MSP. Strangely enough, when I asked to terminate flight following (VFR) when I was near my destination airport, the controller added in an approving tone, "##D, I have to say great work on your communication and following through with instructions as asked, have a great night, squawk VFR... ect"

I was quite honestly blown away by a mid-air compliment (butterflies and all). But is there some new initiative for controllers to be more happy or compliment the positive actions? This is the first time I've heard anything like it.

Thanks a bunch,
Hog

P.S. first post :bounce:

I think we've all been guilty at one point in time of being short with a VFR pilot. When you're really busy, some VFR pilots can really send you down the crapper. I get it, though. VFR pilots are not as experienced as commercial pilots so it is unrealistic to have the same expectations.

I'm guessing the particular controller had a recent problem with someone and was just simply telling you he appreciated you.

I'm glad he made you happy.

What @spades9048 said. I'm glad your experience was a positive one, don't ever hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Heck, I was trained to give bravo clearances out like candy whenever possible. It saves you guys from having to worry about violating it and 75% of the time there isn't a reason not to give it. I work at MSP approach and I try to vector VFR guys "over the top" as much as they want. I know it is a cool experience for you guys, especially if it is during the evening and its a busy time at MSP.

In my area we only have two kinds: bitter old sardonic near-retirees and newbie non-pilot somewhat confused recent signoffs. If you're lucky you could get a "good job" in a couple years when the former retire and the latter know what's going on.

Bernoulli we have those two plus people like me, controller and a commercial rated pilot... Of which about 10% of the folks in my specialty are, including me.

Id like to think it gives us a bit more appreciation for what pilots are going through

I'm blessed with about the best management in the FAA. I know they have my back and likewise they know I can explain to them what hydraulics are, when the airplane has landed and I have time.

We are also lucky to have great supervisors in my area and a pretty good ATM for the facility. Every time I tour another facility that has a less than stellar relationship with management, it makes me appreciate ours. Most people who leave for greener pastures end up coming back.
