New GI Bill and Flight Training

Another interesting thing that I just found out is that with MSU, the initial Multi Engine stuff, you only use 1.45 months of entitlement, for over $22,000 dollars worth of training...you don't get BAH since it's only 5 Credit Hours, but the small hit on my entitlement is pretty nice!

Hi all. Just wanted to post an update. I finished the degree program at COCC, and completed my CFI, CFII, MEI, AGI and IGI certificates. I applied and was hired by a Part 141 school and started working 5 days after graduation. I have a few hours dual given already, and like the school I'm working for. I couldn't have done this without Chapter 33 benefits, and really appreciate the opportunity it allowed for me. Keep pushing and work hard to utilize the benefits you have, I'm here to say it's worth it. Cheers.

Thanks for your service. Happy to provide you my 0.000000001% of coin to help on the education :)

I currently live about two hrs from MSU campus and there are absolutely no ATP training facilities in the area. Closest one is about 6-7 hrs away. Upon speaking to one of the ATP reps I was told that the Post 9-11 would only cover MSU's fees. All training at the ATP site would be out of pocket for me at the tune of about $60,000.
Is it possible to find a school that includes all the flight training in the tuition so that it is covered in its entirety by the Post 9-11?

Thanks in advance!

First off, don't contact ATP at all, deal only with MSU. My VA money was first deposited into my MSU account, who then coordinates with ATP. The people you talk to at ATP are in a call center and are basically monkeys.

Left a voice mail for Jennifer Lamb. Hoping that the cost of ATP will be covered as well so I can move forward with this. There seems to be a lot of confusion with the VA as well as the schools as to what the Post 9-11 GI Bill will cover.

It's pretty simple when you understand the difference between what's covered in a public IHL & Private IHL. The VA is covering $17,500 per academic year because MSU is a private IHL. MSU also is a Yellow Ribbon school, which adds $8,000. Which gives me a total of $25,500 for the year. Not the most money, but this will allow me to fly on the weekends without being rushed, since I work full time.

Congrats to ya! I will soon be following your footsteps as soon as I come off of active duty in September this year. I will be attending aviation program (fixed wing) at Wallace State Community College in Alabama. Thank you for keeping us/me updated on your progress. It has helped me tremendously.

Congrats Ozziecat35! I'm very happy that everything worked out for you. I have been waiting for this day to come, to hear that everything seems to be working out with MSU/ATP. Now I'm going to try to make it happen for my self with MSU/ATP. So how will the BAH work out?

This thread entirely confused me. Last April, I had campus visits in Arizona with both ERAU and ASU. ASU Polytechnic Campus didn't know anything about it but Vets Center at Tempe, confirmed that flights costs were covered since they are part of the degree program. I have a friend who attends the program who also confirmed this to me that all his costs are being paid. ERAU on the other hand told me that all my tuition is covered which required participation in Yellow Ribbon, (they are that expensive) but Post 9-11 GI Bill did not cover flight costs and I would have to loan the flight costs. As a matter of fact a student at ERAU Prescott's tiny Vets Office recommended I go with a state school and that I didn't need to get into debt just to go to flight school. That is why I pressed on ASU! Hmmm!

I remembered that ASU had emailed me about this upon my questions and this was the answer I had gotten...

John,

No, you do not need to do anything different for your flight training. As long as it is part of your program of study, it is covered by the VA at this time.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Tamara

Tamara is the VA certifying official for programs at ASU. So ASU covers it to my best knowledge, and reading yes no and maybe answers here... Well I about shat a brick...

The difference is that ASU is a public school (IN-STATE tuition and fees [including flight fees] are covered) while ERAU is private, and therefore subject to the $17,500 annual tuition cap. ERAU isn't a very attractive option under the current GI Bill, so the ERAU person was right. I decided to go with UND since they give in-state tuition to veterans, which means 100% GI Bill coverage.

Hey thanks for chiming in. I got another confirmation today from ASU's Veterans Office in regards to this. Are you in ND or doing the remote campus thing like the one in PHX? ASU does NOT give in-state tuition to veterans automatically, you have to apply for residency and that has its own requirements in its own.

Ozziecat35, how is everything working out for you with MSU/ATP? When do you start flying?

Got inside information that Arizona State University is switching to ATP for their flight training provider! Hopefully this is not going to affect any type of billing, or VA payments!
