New GI Bill and Flight Training

Hold your horses everybody! I emailed my contact at MSU to start the registration process for the flight courses, and got this,

Yeah, I'm still screwed as well. Still no option for VA flight training for us who live in the largest metropolitan area on the west coast.

Now that flight training is not until the Fall, if you are just taking online classes until then. Are they going continue to pay full BAH or just half.

Any new info about the change of flight training at MSU? Is it going to affect anyone trying to registration now!

Not sure if it will affect registration at all. Since I'm already enrolled, I don't have that hurdle to jump. A call in should get you sorted out. As far as BAH goes, if it's online, it's half only...that's pretty cut and dry.

To all, I have tried to clarify exactly what the new GI Bill does and I keep getting conflicting answers. I advise alll Vets to VERY CAREFULLY explain to a VA rep thier particular situation. E.G Active, Guard, Reserve, deployed for XX days in support of Operation XXXXX XXXXX. As far as I can tell Congress is really trying to help our folks that get deployed for a Contigency operation. However, the overseas operations came about as a patchwork, so the GI Bill Benefits did also. At least for once, Congress is really trying to get it right. It is confusing. Here's an example. An Academy grad or ROTC grad is not eligible for the GI Bill. He/she resigns, then joins the Reserves. "Poof" they are eligible. Don't ask me how but it works. Soooo, just do the original research for your individual situation. BTW, our GI Bill students are getting thier money in about 3 weeks from submission, so some things are working right!

You say in here that ROTC grads aren't elligible for GI BIll, I could've swore that isn't true. I thought as long as they've served 3 years on Active they would get 100% benefits for post 9/11?

I'm thinking he meant what you're saying. You'd need to serve 3 years active duty after completing the ROTC program to be eligible for 100% of the benefits.

I'm curious how a some of the folks on here are able to utilize the BAH for anything other than rent/house payment if your relocating to go to these schools more months at a time? Are y'all taking extended times away from your jobs or ?? Just curious cause I'd like to be doing a program like this in the future myself. (Currently Active duty with future plans to go Guard/Reserve)

I was dead-set on the ATP/Mountain State program as well, until I heard about Mountain State's accreditation problems. They are currently under full review by their accreditation agency after severe problems with one of their other programs. After doing a little research, the school has a lot more problems than I am comfortable with. After all, losing accreditation in the middle of a flight program would create a mess for us veterans. From what I understand, the accreditation agency has made several visits and will decide their fate in June - the probable reason for ATP delaying until fall.

Too bad, I really wanted to stay in TX to do my flight training. Now, thanks to PacNW's earlier posts, I'm thinking about both of the schools in Oregon. COCC and PCC appear to have excellent VA support and compatibility.

That actually makes a lot of sense considering the timeline and chain of events....I just checked and indeed June is the general timeframe a decision is expected from the Higher Learning Commission....this could suck royally for me, as this was my only real chance to use my benefits.

Only chance? Why do you say that?

I think you made the right choice. I would stay away from the MSU thing.

Alot of guys on the board will say I should just go to OCC or go move to another area to get into another program elsewhere. I'm married with a kid and a great job (non-aviation related) that I can't just up and drop. In the Chicago area, the ATP/MSU program is the only thing I've found where I can maximize my benefits and not deal with the $10,000 private institution cap.

I'm on the same boat, I'm up in NYC area and MSU/ATP would be my only chance to use my benefits to the maximize. Moving will be difficult......

For those of you that are considering utilizing your ch.33 benefits for flight school, I recommend looking into Portland Community College. They have a two year program and are under contract with Hillsboro Aviation Inc. I am enrolled in the spring term and will taking my first flight on Tuesday. The VA reps are great here, they have been very helpful and expeditious with all of the paperwork to get me flying ASAP.

How does it work if your out-of-state? Your training capped at $17,500 per academic year? Also, I've heard of folks currently on active duty going here and knocking out a certificate while they were on leave for like a month. Can some explain how that works if you live out of state like that?

If you are out of state it will be more expensive for you, however no it is not capped at 17,500 annually because PCC is a public IHL. Now a good question is what is your home state of record, because your fees will be capped at the highest in state public IHL, for Oregon it is very high thanks to OHSU. I will ask the reps about out of state coverage, I am sure you would be fine though. Not sure about the active duty question, I know that you are allowed to use them while active. However, to get all the flight benies, you need to be enrolled in the degree program. A term is three months long so taking care of a certain rating in a month would be impossible in the PCC porgram.

That fee cap system is gone. It changed in 2.0 to actual fees only. http://forums.jetcareers.com/threads/new-gi-bill-and-flight-training.93310/page-13#post-1769865

I haven't researched PCC, I'm assuming this: The term being 3 months shouldn't require you to be there for 3 months. You have to fly X hours per week, but there shouldn't be a limit that forces you to fly the entire term. In fact, you may need the rating done before to even sign up for the next term.
