New GI Bill and Flight Training

So I talked to a VA rep she said I could used the rest of my Ch. 30 benefit's and then have a 1 year for the post-911. So does this mean I could take lesson's at my local flight school and get 60% rate? I don't want to go to a degree program since I already have a bachelor's and already have my Private.

For your chapter 30 benefits, yes: 60%. For your post 9/11, no. It would be 1 year of the 10,000 or 17,500 (if you enter a degree program). In your case, with only 1 year of access to the post 9/11, I'd consider a Masters program. (unless you already have a Masters)

Well I talked to another lady just now and she said they are making changes to the post 911. She said I have 11 month's of Ch. 30 left which work's out to be 17,000$ roughly. (I have the kicker) She said in August they are thinking about cutting off those who only served 1 term (me) to get 1 GIbill instead of being eligible for the additional 12 month's of post 911 after Ch. 30 run's out.

So Ch. 30 only pay's 60% of my training so if Instr-CFI cost 20k they will only pay 12k but I will have 5k just sitting in my account that I can't use?

Maybe I should use as much up as I can and switch it over before August to post-911 which I can use 10k and also get BAH if they start letting local FBO's in. That way my pay-out will be higher with the added BAH.

Suck's to hear that new's they are cutting out the post 911 for 1 termer's. I was going to use Ch. 30 to get my rating's and go to a 1 yr. Master's program.

From what I gleaned from the message I got from the VA and my own research it sounds like FBOs will be covered by the Post 9/11 for 10K a year. At the moment I'm going to wait and see. My next question is would I be able to use my GI Bill you continue flight training until my benefits are used up?

I too am confused with this whole GI bill mumbo jumbo. I have been researching not only what the best college is for me, but also what benefits I will get from the GI bill. All I've figured out up to this point is what headache medicine works best.

I have been accepted to several school but I am leaning toward Kansas State so I have been more intouch with their VA dept and aviation dept. From what they've told me, with their limited knowledge, is that several students are using the GI bill and ALL costs are covered. That's great and all but with this new thing congress just passed how will I be affected? Does the $10000 cap apply only to FBO training or is that including university? Please correct me if I'm wrong but I'd imagine it's not intended for universities because how many people are going to be able to afford flight training while getting their degree with $10000, especially if the tuition is half that or so? If anyone could help me to figure out if all my costs are going to be covered. I can afford to pay a couple dollars here or there, but if I'm looking at paying a 5 digit number to get all my rating I'm pretty much screwed.

It sounds to me like the 10k cap is for the flight training. If you are going to college you should be able to get the full 17500 per year or whatever it is capped at.

Public university=no cap, Private university=$17,500/yr, Non-university flight school (pt141)=$10,000/yr. The only thing i'm not sure on is if the new rules cover private pilot for a flight school... Bueller?

Ok good. So lets say I'm not a schmuck and I would rather get a degree in engineering instead of aeronautical science and do flight training outside of college. Could I get college paid and flight training paid at the same time while utilizing both the caps, or is it one or the other?

This is just speculation, but the VA rep who contacted me made it seem like flight training will be covered for 10K a year from private to how much you can get out of your benefits. Dontcha' just how the bureaucracy keeps the peasants thoroughly confused?

If you are in a degree program then it does cover private because that is one of the approved courses in the syllabus. Otherwise, it would be akin to them saying "we won't cover your freshman year, but afterwards..."

$17,500 is the new cap for private schools vice the maximum public school cost for a particular state. For most folks reading this forum, that means a yearly $17,500 cap if you decided to do flight training through a FBO/Academy instead of a college with an aviation department. Public schools are still 100% funding. Add the E-5 BAH to it, and its a pretty damn good deal.

I think currently the law is written that 141 program FBO is 10,000. If it was 17500 I would switch over quick.

We have heard that there is a change that is supposed to happen in October of this year. They keep changing their story.

The effective date: 1 Oct 2011 and annual caps are available on the VA web site. They published the catalog in May 2011 that spells it out. I would list the amount but if it changes I would not have a way to update it, so I recommend you go to the source document on-line. but yes, you will be able to use the Post 9/11 GI Bill at Part 141 Flight Schools, as Flight Training (which was previously not allowed), not as "Fees" ( the loophole that people drove a truck thru on this one). good luck!

Bottom Line: NO More 100% Tuition along with Flight training fees--even if part of a degree program. thanks Congress / Mr O' for the "Improvement act--aka 2.0". Now you only get 10K per year for flight training Period. which is good I guess if all you want is the Flight TNG, But my intent (for Son--transferred benefit) was a Degree with flight TNG through ERAU --at 100% covered. still hard to complain --they are still paying for the Degree, that's over 120K, much better then about 47K total benefit under the Old GI Bill that i came in under--but I'm not looking forward to paying that 50K for the Flight TNG. Side question: that 50 K is for the 4 Basic FA courses that are part of the Degree plan--should he get the CFI there as well--so he can make a little money in his SR Yr?? and there is several CFI courses (each --"BIG Bucks) - does he need them all? thx..........

just pulled this additional info from the VA Web Site: " Flight Training Not available under the Dependents Education Assistance program. The Yellow Ribbon Program may apply for those enrolled in degree programs. Approved Flight Training Courses Currently if you are training under the Post-9/11 GI Bill you can only be paid if your flight training is in a program leading to a college degree and we will pay the approved charges not to exceed the state maximums. Ok everyone, this is very simple when you break it down.

Public IHL: full amount at residential rate. This means they cover all tuition and fees, no cap anymore.

Private IHL: capped at $17,500/yr. The school can participate in the yellow ribbon program where the VA will match the school dollar for dollar on any grant provided by the school.

Approved flight school (141): capped at $10,000/yr.

Any questions?

I sent you a pm with this exact info like a week ago, detailing several public IHL's with part 141 flight programs.
