New "controller" at KJFK Tower...

Do controllers not have their own version of "sterile cockpit"....does anybody else not see the safety risks here having kids running around a control tower???

It's cute...but come on!

I don't see how this can be much of a problem. Training controllers are much worse then this little man. I've never seen a sterile tower. A lot of the ones I went to had sirius or xm radio in it which was pretty cool.

New addition to 7110.65 coming out:

"Do not allow children to issue takeoff or landing clearances on local frequency.

PHRASEOLOGY-
BILLY, GIVE ME THAT HEADSET. DELTA 1211 CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY 31 LEFT

If it is bring-your-child-to-work day, only allow children to work ground control for Air China.

REFERENCE
FAAOJO"

Yeah judging by all the hysterical laughing I am always hear in the background of ATC facilities I would say there is no sterility.

It is sad that if the media found out about this it would probably be on national television within 10 minutes and they would cry for the controller to be fired.

There is no way the Kennedy controllers don't know that there are thousands of flightsimmers and aviation enthusiasts listening to their every word at any time of the day or night through the liveatc feeds (or later in their archives), not to mention the fact that their own facility also records every word. I know apps exist for streaming liveatc through your phone, so you don't even have to be at a computer anymore.

"Boston John" at Logan Int'l has his own fan club on their forums that stalks him and tries to figure out his shift schedule so they can listen to him, and he is supposedly aware of it.

In other words, it shouldn't matter whether this thread was indexed or not given the availability of JFK ATC recordings on the net and the amount of people who listen and discuss them elsewhere.

Cutest thing ever though. I wish I got to do that when I was little. :)

I know far worse that has gone on in some towers around this country...

First post for me, thought I had made one already in my month of reading.

Funny...but if I comment "nice sunset" to the other pilot and something goes wrong the media and Fed's would nail me to the wall for breaking sterile cockpit and being unprofessional. But they can run a daycare center in the JFK tower and have a 7 year-old issue clearances???

What happens if there is a runway incursion? What happens when a foreign pilot who already BARELY speaks English misunderstands the speaking of a 2nd grader telling him what to do with his 400 ton $250 million aircraft? What about that pilot in Russia who let his son into the cockpit and they ended up crashing with a child in the pilots seat. How is this different?

A mistake on either end of the radio can lead to tragedy...why would we or should we voluntarily lower the safety margin? Because it's cute??? You gotta be kidding me. As pilots & controllers we spend our careers trying to mitigate risk. While not intentional or malicious why voluntarily introduce it? I'm not sure if you noticed, but the aviation system hasn't been getting a whole lot of positive press these days. This is not what we need right now....

Have you ever been to a tower?

Maybe this kid is young enough to get in on the next PUBNAT. There will be probably be another ATC hiring spree in 25 years.

Interesting clip. I don't think it was unsafe.

That second grader had better radio phraseology than about 67% of all regional pilots, about about 42% of all mainline pilots. I'm less worried about him, and more worried about pilots trying to be "cool" or "cute" on the radio when they're an adult.

I hate it when I just finish telling my student not to use 'with you'

'Center delta/united/continental/southwest with you outta 1.5 FOR 4'

(Not to mention people using TO and FOR)

I say good morning or good afternoon, or lately good night. That is about as far off the norm I go. We fly into congested airspace all the time. There is no reason to add something or shorten something up that makes the controller or others in the area question what you just said.
