New "controller" at KJFK Tower...

All,

I did this when I was a kid. Pops was a good friend with a sup in Dallas and let me say some stuff up in the tower. I was maybe eight or nine years old at the time. Completely ridiculus for someone to turn this into a fiasco that this has become. Mustof been a slow news day. No truth in the news and no news in the truth.

[awaiting FAA enforcement letter for saying this - runs and hides the vhs of it]

Fully agree, but good luck with finding a "buck stops here" bureaucrat in this day and age.

Agree. But look at the hoopla even that caused.

Precisely! Fully agree. But we have to consider the "lowest common denominator" factor here, if only to keep our own butts covered from the rank idiocy that goes on, like we're seeing with this.

Sorry, there I go getting all starry and dreamy eyed!!:insane:

OK now that's funny... how long until you could see again?

I don't remember it being too bad, because I think the green filter was on (I was cleared to land!). It was hilarious. :rotfl:

There's always going to be a time to break the tension or goof around abit, ESPECIALLY in these high-stress positions. This in no way means that people are letting their guard down or being unprofessional. It's just de-stressing, and it actually makes things run better most of the time. I don't think people who haven't been in such an environment can appreciate that; they assume that everything must always be soviet-era serious all the time.

I agree with you 100%.

So this is a safety issue, yet a maxed out duty day, minimum legal request and a commute to and from the airport before doing it all again 10 hours later is not?

face palm.

The kid probably doesn't know any aviation lingo besides what his father told him so he really couldn't have joked around.

And also, "How then could the boy's father believe that his child was capable of manning the controls of one of the nation's busiest airports?

Airport officials are looking into not only why the controller allowed the child to get on the microphone, but how the child was able to access the secure area in the first place. "

1. He wasn't manning the controls, his father was.

2. I've toured BOS tower............

I hate the news headline I keep seeing.."kid directs traffix at jfk"

He didnt DIRECT anything....more just relayed a couple transmissions for his father

Good thing you've done it now, 'cause the FAA is banning tower and TRACON visits over this...

This silliness continues to make us LESS SAFE. Remember way back when, tower tours, and ride-along flights for controllers were encouraged to help pilots and controllers work together better? Understand each others jobs? Bye bye.

I miss controllers being able to jumpseat. That was one program that really enabled us to sit down and understand one another's jobs and increase safety.

I'd love to take over a television station and say, "America, stop pissing your pants over this, now turn the TV off and play with your kids"

We used to quiz the ground control students in the tower with the ALDIS Lamp. Green was correct, Red was wrong, White was two wrong in a row and stayed on until you got it right.

Gotta love a slow Marine Corps tower.

Yeah, how is relaying instructions through a 10 year old any different than through another aircraft, a cellphone, light gun, carrier pigeon, or semaphore flag?

Is there even anything in the FARs or ATC orders that prohibits anyone from transmitting on an air band frequency UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A PILOT OR CONTROLLER?

That was a damned good program. So was the getting together and downing several beers program. The latter is still available.

I really do love this.

Its sad that these bro's will be canned, but it makes more room for the rest of us (that is, if the PUBNAT 7 panel ever meets....)

No kidding. "Outraged in Westchester", while you're posting angry comments on Foxnews.com your 8 year old is playing Grand Theft Auto and looking at internet porn.

The news makes it seem like the kid was the one deciding who to clear for takeoff and clear for landing which obviously wasnt the case

That would fall under the regulation of the FCC, not FAA, FAR's or otherwise.

I have my restricted radiophone permit for a reason ... so maybe? I honestly don't feel like looking up the law though. I also assume that the station is licensed much like a plane, or fbo is, in which case i guess anybody can use it
