I want a Phoenix missile. I instruct in a Tomahawk, think we could rig up a way to mount it on that?
I've never had the opportunity to shoot Phoenix missiles, but I've had the opportunity to lob some Tomahawks and SM-2s. Don't know how hard it is to get all the prerequisites done to actually shoot a Phoenix, but Tomahawks are pretty easy to shoot - make sure you get the target package download from GBS, upload it into the Tomahawks, get the ship into the launch box at the right time, give SWG-3 launch consent and let the computer do the shooting.
As far as SM-2s, I am 4 of 4 for killing drones.
Tomahawk vs. Phoenix - Tomahawks get a bigger bang for the buck - even if it isn't one of those "special" Tomahawks.
And as Hacker says - AMRAAM vs Phoenix - I'd take AMRAAM any day.
SM-2 vs Phoenix vs AMRAAM - I'll take SM2 - nothing like enforcing the Iraqi no-fly zone (in those days) from 120 miles away.
I remember the day when someone told me the Tomcat was dropping air to ground ordnance and I basically called them a liar. I know nothing about air-to-ground stuff other than what my old A-6 buddies told me. Do you know if the F-14 was even a capable platform to deliver ground stuff? That part of it's life is a complete mystery to me.
I did get to observe an F-14 do a bomb run on San Clemente, it was a neat thing to see - basically I remember our general impressions that the F-14 should stick to air-to-air and that we'd never use an F-14 or the Navy (5-inch gunfire support) for that matter for - for anything involving "danger close." I'll take 155/MLRS/Marine Tac-Air/A-10 for that stuff.
But the F-14 was just starting to get into the air-to-ground role and maybe they got a lot better before they retired them. The gunfire mission - the Navy's so bad/awful/abyssmal at it and I've seen a lot of ships that can't hit the broad side of a barn in good weather with the 5-inch peashooter.
