Navy blasphemy

Well at least it is a name based callsign. My favorite one in our squadron was "Roca". Roca is the major manufacturer of urinals and toilets in Spain. One night after a few too many bevvies Roca decided to wash his face in some place other than the sink. he he he
right... There are bad nicknames, and good nicknames :D

Mostly as un-PC as possible on the Navy side I have found. Seems like the AF gets a little more into the cool callsigns, but maybe that has just been the limited exposure that I have had with them.

If we want to have a serious no BS discussion about military platforms and weapon systems and how they compare using hard data, let's start a thread and run with it - this thread isn't it.

Got it -- I'll leave facts, logic, and rational thought out of future posts I make, and instead just stick to emotion and hyperbole.

Hyperbolic emotivism - the new JC hallmark standard gold plated iron fisted silver spoon!

Many are name based or play on the name- some very UN PC (MJG's probably isn't too PC)
Some are trait based: I was Bear for my extreme hibernation behaviour among other things- heck I couldn't catch an innocent nap without a handwritten "Do Not Disturb Cave" sign attached to my hooch door. Another "tactical" was Huggy for his propensity to show affection after a few beers.
The "incident" ones are the funniest, like Roca. I knew an AF BONE guy that was in the guard with briefly that fell asleep on the front row of a general's brief- Hence forth coma.

Always in good fun, if you were a FNG/nugget you wouldnt likely have one and if you were total toolbag you probably wouldnt even get one, or people wouldn't use it.

Kinda a novel, but what cracks me up is the idea that you make up your own call sign/tactical. Like wolfman, iceman, maverick... Like a screen name. Now Goose I could buy as realistic.
.
Anyone else have a "hard sayings log" in their squadron? Now that was some funny stuff.

When was the last time you saw a US carrier sunk?

Since you asked, May 2006.

:) touche

The "USS America". I got my one COD trap and Catstroke on its last operational cruise in early 95' pretty cool for a land based NFO.

But the more precise term is "scuttling" vice "sinking", and it was scuttled after being tested from all sorts of weapons without "sinking".

Yeah, the Oriskany is now a reef, as shown. And the America.....I don't know if video of it's SINKEX will ever be released.

wow...last time I saw her was in the IO near the Persian Gulf...my buddy was on a helo squadron (AW/SAR) and I was on The (s)kitty. We had hooked up and were sailing within sight of one another...kind of sad, but life goes on I guess!

I know you don't like the Phoenix (based on multiple posts), and it has failed in its only combat use.

Might want to check out Tom Cooper's research then. How accurate or not, he shows about 60 kills with the AIM-54 by the Iranians, with the Tomcat claiming a total of 130-150 kills. Some folks doubt his research while others, including a certain individual I know who is a former Tomcat RIO and author, claims his research is solid. Regardless of the actual number, the Phoenix missile has claimed kills, just not in the two times it was actually used in combat with the US Navy...both in 1999. I knew the crew who fired at the Mig-23 in November of 1999 as I cruised with VF-2 and CVW-2.

Totally correct.. I meant USN, and referring to OP Southern Watch. I had to do two TAD at Eskan in 98 and 00 so just missed ya. Totally off subject but I always had to laugh at people that thought the "war" against Iraq started in 03...

That's an understatement.

His reputation among peer authors is not very good, mostly because very few of his claims can be verified and he refuses to show any of his source research.

I take anything he says, especially WRT Iranian Tomcats, with a grain of salt.

I've heard both sides, good and bad. I think it comes down to his sources, some don't believe all are valid as I understand it.

That's right, OSW and ONW. I believe from 99-03, over 1,000 AA attacks, 600 rockets and 60 SAM's launced at Coalition aircraft. Hacker or MikeD might have some insight to that. I knew the E-2C crew that had an SA-2 launched at them while in Kuwaiti airspace.

The shooting started in ONW in 96... Then there was "Desert Fox" in 98 that I actually got to help plan (tiny tiny contribution). I only got one recon flight in the Gulf, but it was pretty hot that day. It was mostly Heavy caliber AAA (kinda like the old german 88s), against the strike packages followed by our guys killing the gun position.
I believe this war that heated up in the Clinton years and our extended presence in KSA was the fuel that led to 9/11. Funny how the brandnew PSAB caoc moved from KSA to al udied (whatever its called) right after OIF launched...

Yep. Used to sit alert at Al Jaber in Kuwait for OSW when it was going on, along with F-16s, at that Kuwaiti F/A-18 base. F-16s would do all the response option strikes into Iraq when they would fire AAA at us occasionally, or they'd launch when Iraq would send up a Foxbat to go tool around in the No FlyZone. Only mission we did in the Hog was a leaflet dropping mission up into the NFZ once.
