Mystery Missile or Jetliner Contrail over Southern Cal. ?

Re: Mystery Missile or Jetliner Contrail over Southern Cal.

So last nigh I had this vivid dream that I was flying one of our airplanes X/C and we were flying through misslies shooting up that looked just like this one. Big, thick contrails shooting straight up or angling off. They had already been shot up and were moving rather slow. There were probably 30 or so and we were weaving in and out of them and taking pictures. No joke.

I wake up and this is on the news.

WEIRD.

Re: Mystery Missile or Jetliner Contrail over Southern Cal.

I don't know if it was a feel good measure or what, but a few minutes ago there were two F22's circling over Simi Valley at around 3000'ish. I grabed my hand held and tuned into to So-Cal and caught the last of their transmissions. Last thing they siad was something like "Descending 18hundred and begining our run *garbled callsign*" They were headed in the direction that this supposed missle came from. There is never F22's or any military over my neck of the woods. I am to far away from Mugu, and there is no SUA over us. If you go to Skyvector or Runwayfinder type in KVNY and then head about 10 miles east to see where I am. Then look at the nearest SUA. It's at Mugu, about 25 miles away.

Where did you get this info from?
They were just a few ideas to consider. I made them up as possibilities that I think are likely.

That's nuts. I wish I was in town to see it. The only military activity I've seen over Simi was a couple A-10's playing around near the Mall the day before the Point Mugu airshow last summer.

Those Raptors would have to be from Edwards, right? Where's the nearest F-22 squadron?

I work in Agoura and heard/saw them as well. They circled around the area about 5 times. Definitely unusual.

Nah, that's just my homeboy Zefram Cochrane messing around with the warp drive device he's been working on.

Matt, NORAD has independent access to all the FAA radar sites. That means primary and secondary targets, Mode C, squawk codes, datablocks, everything. Western Air Defense Sector is located up in Washington state but covers the entire pacific coastline. Chances are if we can see it on flightaware, NORAD probably has a few more resources at their disposal. ;)

I still remember when they were Northwest Air Defense Sector. And there was a separate Southwest Air Defense Sector.

Re: Mystery Missile or Jetliner Contrail over Southern Cal.

That guy's smokink crack! A Titan II (which is what is loaded on our SSBNs) may not be the size of a Minuteman III, but it is by no means tiny. He may be talking about Tomahawks that are carrierd aboard SSGN's which are SSBN's that have been converted to vertically launch Tomahawk missiles instead of SLBM's.

Actually, the SSBNs carry Trident II D-5 missiles. The Titan II was a land based ICBM that was decommissioned in 1987. But yes, the Trident is a big missile - you wouldn't miss that one coming out of the water.

I'm hoping that everyone on here KNOWS its a jet....

...the media is doing what they do best...WE should know better

...ITS A JET

Your correct. Titan popped into my head since I was looking up info on the Minuteman III

The DOD could have dispelled the whole missile theory had they come out and said "no it's just an a jet contrail" The military is really good about giving explanations, but so far they have said that they don't know what it was.

Yeah. My point is that they may have been looking for a rocket, and if it was an airplane, they might not initially find it because they are looking for something moving vertical. Plus, if it was an optical illusion, the real target could have been much closer to shore that they are looking.

Not possible cause that event doesn't happen till around 2063.

Might want to push that back a couple hundred more years. We're still in the "Look! We grew a bean sprout in zero gravity" mode.

Re: Mystery Missile or Jetliner Contrail over Southern Cal.

Yes. Media aside, just look at our own DOD. They say what they *know* it isn't, yet can't at the same time come right out and say what it is, or which aircraft it is. Which makes them look incompetent that we can't even accurately speak to which aircraft are flying near our shores.....ESPECIALLY if it's an airliner.

I remember a few years ago when people reported a UFO, and the Air Force said "Nope, we didn't have anything in the area." UFO hysteria ensues. Then a few days later, "Oh, yeah, our bad - we DID have a few planes there."

http://articles.cnn.com/2008-01-23/us/airforce.ufo_1_fighter-jets-fighter-wing-reserve-base?_s=PM:US

Then the government wonders why people don't trust them.

So what you're saying is that I probably won't be meeting any Vulcans in my lifetime. That just ruined my day.
