My first interview

I'm also worried about the sim ride. All the IFR training i have done is in a G1000. I have zero steam gauge IFR experience. I have been practicing in our sim (g1000 Barron) with the MFD turned off. Does any one have any advice for flying an AST-300?-Matt

No shot towards you but this is exactly my argument with training and glass cockpit stuff. TAA flying is fine once you get some steam gauge experience, but no matter where you go, chances are that your first flying job isn't going to be flying something that is brand new with a G1000. Quite the opposite.

If you can find a local flight school that has a desktop sim, like an Igate or something similar, it'll help. I used the Elite Igate at the school I instruct at before my most recent interview and it helped out immensely.

Hell, load up MS Flight Sim and go tootle around in the Baron 58...

Totally agree with Mark815...Doing a primary instrument training program on a glass cockpit might be the worst idea ever....I'm all for being familar with the stuff, but moving from 6 pack to glass is such an easier transition then the other way around. (Case in point I did my Private in a mix of old ass 172's and new Glass SR20's, and my instrument in 2000 era 172's and I can honestly say it set me up for success.)

Regardless, bust your butt now and give yourself as much of an advantage before hand, and don't ask for input on the interwebz if you're not willing to take what comes back...Usually if you throw poo in the air, gravity will dictate that poo hits you on the head....

Congrats on the interview btw....internal rec's are the bomb.

I'm not really sure I see the big deal here. Pinnacolaba flies the Slaab (EHSI and EADI, so sort of glass) Q400 (glass) CRJ200 (glass) CRJ700 (glass) and CRJ900 (glass). So the only time that he'll run into the dreaded Steam Gauge is during the sim portion of his interview, if that.

Well it's kind of hard to get to fly the aircraft listed if you can't get through the interview sim don't you think??

Thanks,

If I don't get past the sim ride, I'm gonna drive down to SCL and do the Skywest interview prep course. It's only a little bit more than just flying their sim alone.

I don't think you are doomed if you fly glass off the bat, but you are defiantly at a disadvantage if you have never flown an old school HSI. I recently flew some approaches in our steam DA-20 but it only has a heading indicator and a single CDI. I felt comfortable with it. I'm less worried then I was a week ago.

This.

You still need to have that foundation from a standard 6 pack. Companies flying piston multi's, survey aircraft, majority of flight schools etc are not going to have glass equipment.

Heck some major air lines are still flying steam! ;)

Well I made it through the interview process. All the gouge on this interview is spot on so i'm not going to wast time and do another one.

I got the conditional offer to work as an FO. I was happy until the sim eval. The Steep turn was fine. I had a little trouble using he old school VOR (I'm used to an HSI). I got turned around and was reverse sensing. I knew something was wrong and I was about to fix it when the observer told me. He talked me through the mistake I made. I told him I had seen what I had done.

Then I Went full scale deflection on the ILS and told the guy I had to go missed. He vectored me to the holding point. Asked me how I would enter the hold and I told him correctly. Then he said that was all he needed to see.

They shipped me off to the drug test and then sent me home. I guess I'll hear in 7-10 days. All in all not a bad first interview experience but I don't think I got the job. I was just not sharp in the SIM eval.

A part of me wonders though. If they really did not want me after my crappy sim eval, would they still send me off and pay for me to get drug tested?

Oh well...

Thanks for every one's help.

Did you take the wonderlick test? Also, why would you think they dont want you if they already gave you a conditional offer?

Yeah I took the wonderlick test.

The conditional offer was on passing the SIM eval. I did not feel like I did so well. The guy doing the eval never said I passed or failed. He just said, "Thats all I need to see" and then shipped me off to get drug tested.

So I guess I don't know.

They probably wouldnt send you for a drug test if you failed. Hope it goes well for you.

Thanks, I have my fingers crossed. If I don't get on with Mesaba/Colgan then I need to pay to get to 100 hours of Multi Time. I'm not looking forward to that!

Hey buddy, what time did you interview? Im sorry, drawing a blank on your name/face, I was in your group too. Im not sure how they look at a full deflection, I didn't go that far (1.5 dot off), but he also said "that's all I need to see". Like everyone's saying, they don't send you to the drug test if you fail that. Not sure if there is a concrete answer somewhere, but Im pretty sure so. PM me!

Congratulations on your success! I want to say thank you for your write up. I love reading these airline interviews. Also your honesty is awesome too. Cudos big time. Sorry about the week before your checkride having the hard time with your friend. Hope everything is better now.

Wishing you the best in your success.

Just had a thought pop up in my head, after reading Matt's post on steam gauge experience.. I was also asked if I have glass time, within a few seconds of the sim ride. Maybe they are looking for that specifically, not sure how much it really hurts you if you have zero steam time, but in my case, I have zero glass time.. Or was that their "distraction" talk? Anyone?
