Lemme guess...primed the snot out of it, and was only prevented from having an intake fire by the fact that the throttle was open halfway...then he did all his pre-taxi prep (assuming he did any) with the engine turning at 1600 RPM, after keeping the starter engaged for 5 seconds AFTER the engine started.

I haven't decided what I like best on instrument stage checks:

1. Never loads anything for the approach until accepting the approach clearance, even though they were told to expect the approach 10 minutes ago.

2. Tries to load the GPS for the approach, fails, and repeats the exact same sequence 10 times expecting different results.

There are way too many fun things to pick just one or two.....

Thinking Simulated IFR means anything to ATC, tuning and tracking to/from the wrong VOR (which in my case often means right into a mountain), assuming the GS is OTS when tuned to a VOR instead of a LOC, everything falling apart when I turn the GPS to something other than the moving map, actually getting on the radio and declaring an emergency when I give them a simulated emergency, .....

I used to have approach/center tuned in just for the chatter, until that happened one too many times.....

"Diamond Star N747PZ, Salt Lake Center, copy your emergency squawk 7700..."

"Salt Lake Center, disregard emergency, training flight, simulating emergency, that was not supposed to be broadcast 747PZ"

"7PZ, Salt Lake Center, say again?.....

"Salt Lake Center, disregard, negative emergency, repeat disregard, negative emergency, 7PZ"

"7PZ, Salt Lake Center, so you are negative emergency?"

"Salt Lake Center, Affirm, negative emergency 7PZ"

"Roooooooger that 7PZ, have a nice day"

I don't think instrument students should be allowed anywhere near a GPS until they have MASTERED the other stuff. Give 'em dials instead of screens.
 
Thats how I learned, Dual VORS was the most advanced piece of equipment in the cockpit. I think im better from it, I just need to get some more GPS approaches under my belt
