Multi Add On

Wow. My rating is going to be 3K and 10 hours. I'm at 6 an just now starting to feel confident enough to handle an emergency. Sounds like some of the places are just pencil whipping people to the check ride. I guess they figure every one is going the get the proper training you need when they get to the airlines.

Even Action Multi engine ratings is 7 hours. I just can't imagine being ready for a check ride in 4 hours or less. I'm sure it can be done, but how competent of a pilot would you be?

Most places I rent from even require at least 5 hours for check out in a complex aircraft.

I can relate to what 'youre saying. I'm looking to get my MEI add on and haven't touched a multi engine plane since 2005. I'm working on getting all the book stuff out of the way now, so, when it comes to flying...that's all I have to concintrate on.

No, but thats not the point.

I thought the whole point was to be a safe and competent pilot and the whole point of the check ride was to confirm that?

Not accusing anyone of being unsafe as I haven't flown with any of you and couldn't begin to comment. But let me ask everyone here, would you be willing to put a loved one in a twin airplane flown single pilot by someone who has less than 10 hours multi?

No.
10.1 hours, surely they're competent now.
What's the magic number you're looking for here?

The insurance companies whole-heartedly agree with you. Here, not only can you not take loved ones but you need to have logged 15 hours of dual received. So guys go get their ticket in 7 hours and then have to tote their instructor around for another 8. At least it counts toward the "sole manipulator" definition of PIC. My plan very shortly is to do the CMEL in 7 or 8 hours and then roll straight into MEI work. That way the time with the instructor is at least adding value.

Look at it as an absolute beginner advancement. I don't know any company that is allowed to rent their multi out to a 10 hour multi guy or even able to rent it out for solo flights. It is an insurance issue (understandable one too).
