MU-2B accident in New York

Sooo ... is stupid and ignorant something you come by naturally or do have to practice?

Single pilot high performance jet certainly isn’t unsafe or impossible; tactical jets do it all the time. In the clear, in the weather, whatever. It does take not only training and currency, but an increased level of ability, situational awareness, and thought process to keep ahead of what’s going on and the rate they are going on at. Single pilot IFR, no autopilot, round dials, doing a penetration HI approach in IMC and low Wx at 300+ knots before final was routine ops. Just had to have the ability to think faster than 6 miles/min and the SA to prepare for things further out than that. Not unsafe, but unforgiving to those who didn’t possess that.

I guess the difference is they don't just hand out fast jets based on paperwork, most folks washout for any number of reasons. Much like pro sports it's a true meritocracy, either you can or you can't, your race or genitals have no bearing on your ability. I don't know why some people find that offensive.

The following quote is shoved down the throats of many a rookie pilot:

"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect."

Guess what, this is absolute and complete horse crap.
Poetic nonsense vomited by wannabe pilot philosophers.

Aviation IS inherently dangerous.
Flying through the air in an aluminum tube at hundreds of MPH is dangerous.
What's the difference between crashing a 500mph car and a 500 mph airplane?
The amount of time to think about your mistakes.

If it's unforgiving, it's dangerous by nature.

"but DT, I'm a gooder pilot, therefore the plane is safe!!"

No, you're relying on your superior flying skill to make up for your inferior choice in airplanes.

"Climbing mount Everest isn't inherently dangerous."
Yeah, kinda IS dude.....

The MU-2 has one of, if not the best, safety ratings in its category since implementation of the SFAR. We've had now 9 fatal accidents in 17 years. Yes, that's 9 too many, but it's a testament to the effectiveness of the training program when you look at similar platforms that don't require a type rating.

It's unforgiving of people that don't take the training seriously, don't follow the profiles/checklist, don't understand the airframe, and/or allow its immense capabilities to get them into situations they shouldn't have entered in the first place. No different from any other high performance turbine equipment. It's no more or less unforgiving than any other type-rating required airframe, and the SFAR has shown it's perfectly safe when operated in the hands of a pilot that understand the plane and their own capabilities.

If you ever find yourself in Maryland I'd be happy to give you a tour of my plane and take you for a ride.

Assuming sometimes leads to getting my feelings hurt. LOL!

“Oh cool, pie!”

“WHO ATE A SLICE OF THE PIE?! That was going to the orphanage!”

It's an open invitation, as always. I love showing the plane to new people and we've had some good flights with killbilly and NovemberEcho and even drug Ian_J out to see the plane before he graced us with a tour of his hangar once upon a time

Of all people I owe you a flight, it'd be an honor to take you back the the glory days of questionable avionics and unquestionable certainty in our ability to get it done :)
