Most Extreme Airports

I really hate the history channel.

The History Channel needs to be renamed. It was once a great documentary channel but now has some of the stupidest programming that has absolutely nothing to do with history whatsoever. History International is a bit more reminiscent of the "old" History Channel.

Watched the first part of it, but soon got bored and turned over to Deadliest Catch.

Pretty over dramatized I thought.

As previously posted: full of recaps, overly dramatized and not all that extreme (except for a few)

Loved the St. Maarten part as we've been there and done that.
Completely mesmerized by that mustache:rawk:.

I watched it last night, wasn't that great. They covered Courchevel for 30 seconds. And Lindbergh Field, seriously? I understand it's congested, but of all the airports in the world that was 10th? Not very "Extreme" if you ask me....

Only things I didn't like were the constant recaps. Without those it could have been an hour show.
I thought the inflight camera work and "experts" were better than the average aviation bit.
They have to hype it to "extreme" to get Joe Shmoe to watch it instead of the Spike network. Without that it'd be on PBS.
Overall it wasn't that bad. Perhaps I've just lowered my expectations for aviation programs on television. I think some forget how ignorant to aviation the general public and the group this program was marketed toward. Can't imagine the History Channel was trying to get just pilots to watch and like it.

I caught it last night, and I agree with the assessment thus far. I know of some that probably are more extreme than what was on the show, and I haven't flown out of the southeast. I think it might have been better titled "Most extreme Airports Air Carriers are Willing to Go Into" although that discounts all the piston/turboprop guys doing bush stuff that are technically air carriers.

I was surprised to see Eagle/Vail but not Aspen. And if you go on special training required for the airport, Missoula, MT has some pretty interesting approaches. And that doesn't even mention Alaska; and we're still not off paved runways.

It's everywhere now. The cheap "top ten" list spread over 10 pages or 30 minutes of advertisements. If you're lucky you get a talking head commenting.

not when you can catch a visual from 10,000 abeam the numbers and have a sporting time dropping in there.

You do know that the show wasn't created for pilots, right? It's for the average Joe Blow who probably enjoyed the show. I also agree that the History channel is going down the same road as Discovery and TLC...all junk programming. At least the Science channel still has cool stuff on!

The part on St Maarten and the jetblast couldn't help but remind me of the time I was in the tower and watched a fully loaded C-17 spool up to depart a 4200 ft runway. The two poor guys fishing in the john boat in the river 50 ft off the runway end got the ride of their lives and wet. :laff:

Nice! I like how the guy in the right seat has his arm out the window, he's rollin' 172 style there!

Why was EAGLE VAIL on the show?? I missed it, but saw them talk about it during the last ten seconds count down...

Im going to be flying in there soon.. WHY SO BAD... and yes i get it there are mountains there...???

Also- FYI - i've never been there, so an insight would be great!

Agree with those stating that the History Channel has gone "down the tubes" so to speak. It seems like every time I turn it on, some conspiracy nut is spitting his stuff.

Am I the only one that thought Lukla was pretty intense? Or is that too noob-fest?

The no go around factor alone seems like it would make it pretty intense.

Lukla was insane. Some of the airports they chose were certainly worthy. The airports were the best part of the show I though.

I don't know if you mentioned earlier in the thread or not, but did you actually watch this? I understand it's meant to be accessible, and I'm fine with even moderate amounts of "dumbing down" aviation so it's digestible to the uninitiated... But I think you're seriously underestimating or misremembering exactly how loud the booming orchestral music was during the in-cockpit view of a landing at one of the airports. I mean, it just kept getting louder and louder, and the landing was routine and unspectacular. The only thing making it dramatic was the overbearing music.

It was just ridiculous, I actually broke down laughing at its sillyness.

I just spent 4 months in Nepal, and yes Lukla is that insane.

WHo was the narrator? Cuz that voice was some creepy schtuff!
