Most exotic/interesting airports in the U.S.A

What years were you on the Ranger from? I had an uncle that was a Viking crew member on her for awhile.

'92-'93 Made the final cruise and then she was decom'd.

Yokosuka, Japan
Pusan, South Korea
Singapore (canceled, thanks to former Iraqi dictator)
Dubai, U.A.E.
Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
Jebel Ali, U.A.E.
Perth, Australia
Sydney, Australia
Pearl Harbor, HI

Sicily Assault Landing Zone Fort Bragg, North Carolina, or any of them for that matter.
Holland, Rhine-Luzon, St Mere-Eglise

Its seriously cool to see a C-130 land on dirt.

Compacted Clay, C-17 Capable...But I'm partial cause I help rebuild/repair it.

Elk City, ID
S90
Operational restrictions: IS A CURVED RY.
Gradient: 2.0
Obstructions: 60 ft. trees, 600 ft. from runway, 75 ft. left and right of centerline, 10:1 slope to clear

Glad to see somebody put a picture up. I nearly required surgery to remove myself from the seat after my first landing here.

The rest of the country's got nothing on the Northwest. In any category (except desert, but I hate deserts, and there are deserts in the Northwest anyway, just not the best ones). Luckily most of the population hasn't figured that out and still condemns themselves to life in California, or worse, east of the Rockies (can't figure out that one for the life of me).

Affirmative!

That is cool!!! If I had a car, I would drive up there just to see it:D

Travolta's house is in the upper right corner of the picture off the midfield taxiway. His house is mostly surrounded by trees.

21W is another interesting airport in the Northwest. I have not seen any pictures that can really show what it looks like with the surrounding terrain. A 2,650' elevation airport enclosed by 6-7,000' hills on either side.

Utah has a few interesting airports. http://www.airnav.com/airport/UT03 Used to go here 2-3 sometimes 4 times a day. The picture does it no justice. You always land to the east (toward the bridge) because of the slope and usually had a quartering tail wind. Take off was right at a tall cliff face where hopefully there was some lift. Not too bad in a CE 206 or 182 but if you were in a 207 you may have to go down Lake Powell a ways to gain altitude. Also on Lake Powell is Bullfrog http://www.airnav.com/airport/U07.

Then there was Mineral Bottom. http://www.airnav.com/airport/UT75 Fly down a canyon low level, make a left turn at the river, cross over a little ridge and land. Very fun. Take off was fly down the Green River to get altitude. There was also this ranch up at around 9000' we used to go into.

Around the Great Salt Lake there was a couple strips on Fremont Island and Promontory Point as well as a road on Stansbury Island.

I am sure someone will chime in on many of the strips in Alaska like Sparrevohn, Whitier, downtown Cordova (CKU not Mudhole), landing on the beach, any mining strip...etc...etc...etc. Ah the memories.

Oh and don't forget Leadville http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLXV.

Jackson, I have to agree with you. My dad used to fly C-130's out of Pope. It was cool to watch them in action out there.

I want that dirt.

Catalina Island airport is by far my favorite, here is the link:

http://www.catalina.com/airport.html

If you ever get a chance definately fly into Catalina, it is just breath taking.

P.S: For the first time, never fly alone. Get a local guy to be your safety pilot. Catalina's runway can be tricky at times.

Shhhhhhh, keep it low, we want people to keep thinking that the Northwest is a rainy, sad place, where people is miserable. That way, as you said, people will still ruin their lives moving to SoCal, and will leave us alone here. :D

Swope Farm Airport (WV11) - Fanrock, WV
http://www.airnav.com/airport/WV11

The Cincinnati sectional chart actually labels the airport as "Hazardous"!!

1250'x30' - 11% grade - Restrictions: Land Uphill / Takeoff Downhill

18649

The guy who owns it supposedly flys an Aztec or similar multi-engine out of it.
