More Furloughs to come @ Comair...

Well, this thread got a little off track form the original topic...

For those that care, ALPA met with Comair Management yesterday and was told they need to furlough 100 additional pilots. This will go back to a DOH of ~July 2005.

Holy Beejeesus. That would go back pre-CFI days for me.

Incredible, so sorry...:(

Amazing, ain't it?

If I had gotten the job at Colgan when I interviewed, I'd be a Q captain right now.

If I had stayed at Amflight, well I probably would have fallen asleep and crashed into a mountain, so that's not a very good outcome.

If I had gone to ExpressJet when they called the FIRST time (day after my captain ride at Amflight) I'd still be holding a line as an FO at Express. Maybe I woulda been smart enough to bail to Compass and upgraded in class.

If I had gone to Comair (interview offer came the same day as Express) I'd be getting furloughed after 3 years.

If I had gone to Eagle, I'd very obviously still have a job.

If I had gone to Mesaba I'd be a captain, have my 1,000 TPIC and be moving back into the right seat of the jet with an easy schedule.

If I had gone to 9E, I'd hate my life and want to die.

Now with all of that being noted in the last few years, I can tell you that 3 years ago I'd tell myself that I was crazy for writing that, because I thought Mesaba would for sure furlough soon, Eagle would implode, 9E would continue to have a quick upgrade and Colgan would NEVER get Q's.

Never say never, I guess.

A lot of folks are starting to realize why the following three questions resulted in "facepalm":

1. I'm leaving X to go to Y because my friends at Y say X sucks and Y is better.
2. What's the upgrade time at Z?
3. I'm waiting for A because it's the top regional to work for.

Hey! I haven't been killed yet. And flying those little dinky runs out on the west coast is nothing compared to the amount of flying that we do on the east coast or the flying down in the Carribeans.

I'm aware, but I don't do well unless I get 8 hours of sleep a night, and I REALLY don't do well if I can't get those 8 hours in about the same period of time every day.

Most flying jobs don't allow for that, but at least at Express I had another guy to poke me with a stick when I started to get punchy.

I'm just poking fun at you....you slacker!

I can't wait to see the numbers once the next round of furloughs are done. Hell, I flew with 12 year Captains that were on reserve when I was still there. This fall, you will have to be a 15+ year Captain just to hold CVG as a base and maybe a line.... Ridiculous!

WHile I hate to see anyone furloughed, I know just how fun it is not, this isn't really a suprise it's happening. Back when the legacies were slowly bleeding after 9/11 and the regionals were growing, a few analysts were saying that once the legacies got their costs in line, their regional partners were going to be the one's shrinking during the next downturn.

Now, most analysts can't predict their way out of a wet paper bag with a copy of the "Farmer's Almanac," but I had a feeling this one was true. During every downturn there is always retrenchment, and the guy with the high cost structure gets their turn in the barrel. If the cost cutting hadn't been so draconian at the legacies '02-'06, then we would see another round of cutting at the legacies and another growth spurt at the regionals. Blame it on the bankruptcies and mergers for where we are today.

Right now, the only thing saving me from being downgraded is the fact that Pinnacle was running a notoriously slim ship when everything came crashing to a halt. Now, if Delta decides to slash block hours like a firesale, I might still find myself either commuting to DTW or back in the right seat. Still have to wait and see on that one. About the only thing that would put me on the street would be Pinnacle shutting down totally. And I'm pretty lucky in that aspect.
