Morbid curiosity. Upgrade times?

Well, recently divorced, no kids. Not tied to Florida. So I won't commute, but I’lmost likely move.

Sorry about your divorce :/

However, if I may say, without being tied down to cities, children or need to be a quick hop from an extra set of family members/in-laws, the world is your oyster and you can “write your own ticket”.

Welp, I'm crazy and got the first available upgrade and commuting to NYC for it here at the AAirline. Been here 1.5 years. Guess I really hated driving 20 minutes to work, and really missed commuting by air as I did for 12 years. But junior DFW went 2 months senior to me, so I may not have to commute for long. But holding some weekends off was nice for a minute. :p

Just out of curiosity, which equipment was that on? I tried to upgrade in DFW 320 DOM and it went way senior. Been here a little over 5 years. I could have held 320 INT but did not want it.

I'll be doing the same thing this time next year. I'll DM you then and ask if you how it worked out. :D

I got 737 INT and I'll be second from the bottom. Should have bid 737 DOM as I'd have 10 or 15 below me. Only good thing is I won't really have to cover EWR on the INT side. (or so I was told)

The level of liberty you get from this is pretty darn great, even if I wish I was closer to my aging parents.

Oaktown and Alameda are cool. Don’t listen to what the haters say.

Surprised about your opinion on Oakland. We stayed at the Marriot downtown and I was on "alert mode" just walking to Merritt Lake during the day and pretty much stayed within a block of the hotel at night. Was sorry to see Pacific Coast Brewery close. Pretty dogy area downtown. I remember walking to Jack London square 30 years ago but wouldn't think of it now. Never been to Alameda but I could see it being more upscale and safer. Bet there are some nice waterfront condos.

Congratz on the upgrade. 1.5 years to the left seat at AA is pretty amazing.

I’d personally stay in the hills outside of the Oakland downtown core. It’s always been sketchy. The Oakland Hills are very upscale. Basically it’s two worlds out there. The flats and the hills. Same for Hayward. But if I were OAK SWA based I’d want to be close to the airport for the short commute. I think on captain pay it wouldn’t be tough to make a good living picking up a bit of extra flying. Which I’d think would be easy if you were 30 min or less to OAK. Which still puts you at a very reasonable commute time to sit reserve and pick up extra etc.

I used to sail a lot out of Brickyard Cove in Richmond of all places. It was super upscale and nice but just down the road it was extremely sketchy. Anywhere near a yacht club in the SF Bay is usually extremely nice. Nice bars and if one wanted to there are live aboard opportunities as well. I’d rather own a home in the SF Bay even if it meant being house poor for quite a long time. But the live aboard thing could be a fun option.

Sounds like the SeaTac area honestly, in terms of nice vs not in close proximity. I know my wife visited her BFF while said friend was living in Oakland, at the time in law school at UC Berkeley. She had her purse ripped off her shoulder in like 10 seconds after walking outside, and I had to somehow get her passport to her so she could board a flight home. That was probably 15 years ago.

Bay Area traffic is second only to LA and the nexus of freeways leading into Oakland is basically a hellscape. If I wanted to upgrade at SWA as quickly as possible and not commute via air to work I’d become house poor AF and find the nicest place in Alameda or Oakland I could barely afford.

I never spent much time around Hayward other than at the airport but up at Cal State Hayward seemed nice.

The BART system is tied to OAK and that is an option too. But your car would likely be broken into if you left it at a BART station. Walking would be problematic due to crime.

Alameda FTW in this case probably could barely afford it on captains pay but it’s a really nice spot.

FWIW, Coliseum is the second most dangerous station in the system…after Fruitvale.

That said, I’ve still never had a problem while on the actual property of the District.

Fwiw, doesn’t look like OAK is the most junior upgrade in the system anymore.

Also, I agree that Alameda is a really nice town. Lots of restaurants, shops, people outside walking around. If I have a long OAK overnight I’ve been known to Uber over there for a movie and dinner, or to stop at Trader Joe’s and get snacks for the next day. If I could afford it, I wouldn’t mind settling there.

A friend of mine from high school lives there and he has an Instagram project where he is documenting every street/block in Alameda. I've spent a fair bit of time on the "island" and it's one of the few places in the Bay area (along with Marin) that I'd consider living if based there for some reason.

Pretty much anywhere in the Diablo Valley for me.

Hell that might happen anyway, and I'd suck it up and commute.

WHOA...wait a second. What is this 737 DOM and 737 INT you speak about? This like the A and B teams at another airline?
