MONEY for the flying training

hi,

i have few questions about the problem that almost everybody worries about, the money

i'm planning to go to University of Oklahoma(major in aircraft pilot) and its estimated annual tuition (with required fees, books, etc.) is about $4000-5000

and i THINK i can get about $10000 each year from the financial aids, scholarships, etc.

so i have no problem with paying the tuition for the college, but i heard that i have to pay extra money for the flying training

i couldn't find how much flying traning costs

if anybody went through the similar way as i planned or knows about this, your reply will be really helpful for me and i'll greatly appreciate it

thank you

There are a few flight scholarships that I have seen but they have not been for much money, perhaps $1000-2000. Most people pay for flight training by one (or multiple) of three ways:

1) support from the parental units

2) work, get the check, give the check to flight school

or

3) apply for a flight training loan, usually from Key Bank or Sallie Mae

The best thing to do is to call them up and ask or maybe even set up a meeting with an advisor. You can probably expect the flight training to be around 35-45 grand.

35-45 grand for an year or for whole 4 years? i'm sorry i'm really new in this

Depends on the school...could be either....

What state are you from??

Sorry to hijack this thread a little but it costs 4,000 to go to OU as an in-state student? Does that include ALL fees like housing, tuition, and books?

I go to Rutgers and it costs about 17,500 a year all included. Probably one of the most expensive state schools around.

Ahhh...then you need to check out Southeastern Oklahoma State University, located in Durant!!! You can find a link to it on my website (just make sure you sign the guest book).

Go to the bottom of the page and click "Links" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Great school, and cheap too!!!! Check it out and then come let us know what you think!!

looks really good, but if the OU's flying training costs are about same as SOSU, i would choose OU

mainly because i live near OU and SOSU's annual tuition is only about $1500 cheaper than OU's

i think the matter is the flying training costs, but i can't really find out OU's flying training costs

but i think SOSU is great school, if OU's flying training costs are too high for me, i'll probably think about going SOSU

thanks for the help

to saggy: i meant annual tuitions without house and board

$1500/semester X 8 = $12,000. That's alot of money!!!

If SOSU is cheaper, why would you go someplace more expensive if you're concerned about cost?

oh i thought it was annual tuition

well it's really confusing because on fastweb.com, it says that the annual tuition for SOSU is about $2400 without house and books

but on aviation.sosu.edu, it says that the semester tuition for SOSU is about $3000 without house and books

and because both informations are updated in 2003, i wasn't sure

but even though SOSU's annual tuition is about $2400, it's about $1500 cheaper than OU's (ANNUALY)

if SOSU's annual tuition is about $3000, it would be about $1000 cheaper

well yes, $6000 or $4000 is still a lot of money, but i wasn't sure how much i'll get from financial aids(FASA and OHLAP) and scholarships, so...

i hope i made sense

SOSU is considerable school, and it was very good to know it

i'll probably ask some of students from each school about the education quality of each school

Man, I WISH I could say "only" and "$1500" in the same sentence. That's more money than I make in a month.

fastweb.com?? shouldn't you be checking tuition via the universities themselves? don't expect some website to tell you what the actual tuition costs are going to be! go straight to the university manuals....that's your best bet for finding out what hte actual per semester or annual tuition will be...

As someone who spent one semester, and only one semester, at SOSU I would advise you to find a different flight school. The way their program works you first do the private which takes one semester, then two semesters doing the commercial, and after the commercial is when you do the instrument. The vast majority of flight schools have you do your instrument and then your commercial. They told me that they train you on the instrument rating while doing the commercial but you still end up paying for additional flight costs after the commercial to complete the instrument. Not to mention there flight costs are higher than any of the other flight schools I have attended. I am not saying the training is not high quality, only that it can be done cheaper another way. Also if you visit the town of Durant your decision will be made a lot easier. I am also a full time student and and doing my flight training with a flight club in beautiful Austin TX. I found a loan to pay for my flight training through bank of america called the education maximizer loan. It is not done through my school and does not affect any of my other financial aid. It is considered for supplementing the cost of an education. Hope I could give some useful insight.

not that i wouldn't go for the college aviation thing (being that it doesnt provide a good backup in case things dont workout) but if you were to go to a college aviation program I would check this one out. I ve heard nothing but good things about them and have flown with an instructor who did the program and had very good things to say about it. Their degree transfers to ERAU and Central Washington for your bachelors.

Big Bend Community College

They have an all Beechcraft fleet with the exception of their taildragger and floatplane.

Big Bend has a good program...I would have gone there except I couldn't see living in Moses Lake, WA for two years. Went to Riddle instead...what a mistake that was....

ChrisRhee. Do you have any other interests that you could major in besides flying? I don't think a degree in aviation is the best bet unless you just can't come up with something else. At the time, I couldn't see past the aviation degree, either, but now I'm wishing I had majored in something else. It's also cheaper to get your ratings through a flight school that's not associated with a University.

Alchemy, I have been flying with UFC. I haven't been actively flying in the area for a few months because I just recently moved back from SOSU in January. I just received the money to start flying again and I am waiting till may to start flying so I can skip having to pay spring dues for the club. I have done the majority of my flying and training with the club.
Who do you instruct for if you don't mind telling.

Nah, I don't mind. I work for Lone Star Wings. If you need to find a complex airplane when you start your commercial, or if you just want to get your high perf/complex endorsements give us a call. Have fun with the UFC!
