\"Minimum\"

I was watching a DVD on the A340-300 and when they come in for a landing the recorded 400, 300 etc calls out. Inbetween the 300 and 200 it calls out minimum, what's it supposed to mean? Just wondering. Cya

Re: \"Minimum\"

I believe that "minimum" is exactly what the guy above said, the decision altitude on the ILS. Fancy Airbus is just letting the computer say it instead of the non-flying pilot. My real question is what "Retard" means? Is that telling the flying pilot to flare?

Re: \"Minimum\"

When it calls minmum it lets you know that you are at the Decision Altitude on an ILS approach. This is usually 200 feet above the ground. In case you don't know, this is the point where you must see the runway environment in order to attempt the landing. If you a re still in the clouds or cannot see the runway for whatever reason, you have to start climbing and execute the missed approach.

I am failry certain the "reatrd" means it is time to start reducing the throttles to idle for landing.

Re: \"Minimum\"

Yes, the "Retard" command in the Airbus means to close the thrust levers for landing. One of my professors at Riddle joked that the first time he flew the Airbus simulator, he thought it was telling him what it thought of his piloting abilities!! </politically incorrect humor>

Re: \"Minimum\"

I never got to fly the Airbus although I heard it calling the pilots retards many times while on the jumpseat.

Some said it was a French conspiracy!

Re: \"Minimum\"

More correctly it is based on what the pilot sets on the radar altimeter setting ie: 200 for an ILS and whatever for a non precision approach. You also can have other "verbal" warnings such as Localizer / Glide Slope call outs for going beyond half scale I believe. Another call out is based on EGPWS or Enhanced Ground Proximatey Warning System ... call outs would be Terrain / Go Around. TCAS would be yet another audio call out in a cockpit ... yes I said cockpit.

Re: \"Minimum\"

In the RJ, and I'm sure many other airplanes, we can set the DH or MDA on the PFD and the airplane will call "minimums" when that altitude is reached.

Re: \"Minimum\"

Just a bit curious, why do they use male voices for these "callouts". wouldn't it be more appealling to some to hear a female's voice every now and then. I think this should be a future option switch on every automated flight deck.

Re: \"Minimum\"

The ERJ is politcally correct and has both male and female voices for various items. For example

"TakeOff-OKAY" Female
"500 HUNDRED" Male

Re: \"Minimum\"

I think the Airforce did a study on this and what they found was in high a demanding situation ie: combat and or malfunctions in a single seat fighter that the male fighter pilots were disregarding the feminine voice pattern and missing key clues to malfunctions. The civilian applications are left to the manufacture's decisions, as the "voices" in our jet are both masculine and feminine.

Re: \"Minimum\"

When the Mode S on the Garmin stops giving us other aircraft on the GPS display because we moved out of the radar coverage that supports that feature, a female voice with a british accent says "Traffic not available" Me and my student loved to hear that voice...
