Mesa loses AA contracts

See, I keep hearing these things about Mesa, but always second-hand. The first-hand stuff I get from people currently working there are that despite the training department being a little disorganized, it's a good place to work with great people. And while their EFB policy is a little weird to me, I get why even that exists. And now that they pay a lot more than they did, it's really hard for me to wrap my head around what you're saying above.

Maybe it's just the work rules and stuff? I don't know. I work for what many would consider a bottom-feeder but I kinda like this bottom-feeder, absent any other experience. <shrug>

Every person I know that has a "storied" personal past, and/or has significant historical training issues, has ended up at Mesa and is flying airplanes when everyone else said no F'in way. I have trained lots of new hires that have come from Mesa and honestly, lots of them are fantastic. But I will say, the only times I have had to unsat events multiple times and have seen them eventually having to resign, have ALL been from Mesa.

I had a new hire who was an RJ CA at Mesa, then came over to Eskimo world. I can honestly say he was just about the worst pilot I have ever seen. No basic IFR skills, a complete inability to manage anything in the flight deck. Would become so task-saturated he would shut down mid-session. All he could talk about was "but on the RJ..." He was given so many retries on the same event and still couldn't get beyond the FTD. He repeated one event 5 times and even when he knew what was coming, he was still so far behind the airplane, it was like he wasn't even in the cockpit.

He went back to Mesa...

what’s weird about their efb policy?

They give you a monthly allowance for an EFB rather than providing you with a standardized model - at least, they used to.

One of our instructors (who was a CP at a now-gone regional) explained to me yesterday that Mesa didn't want to issue EFBs and put the FAA-required controls in place to go fully-electronic. So they allowed a mishmash of tablets as long as they met a specific form factor, and the FAA said, "ok, but you have to have paper releases as backup."

The paper releases are still a thing, as is the monthly stipend, but I don't know if it's still bring-your-own-device rather than "bring your own ipad." I know XJT used MS Surface tablets and they weren't popular.

Hmm. I've heard the jokes before - the pilot who couldn't get on at Mesa because not enough DUIs, for example - but my personal, direct experience has been with pilots who were good, sharp, motivated instructors who brought the right mix of attributes to the table.

And as I think about it, yeah, there is one glaring exception who just got hired there and I don't think that pilot will survive training. But maybe I'm wrong. Hopeful for them.

I'm too inexperienced to know much more. I may be that guy later in life, but I'm trying not to be. :)

The Atlas FO who crashed was from Mesa.

Friend of mine who flunked out of training at Republic went to Mesa when they weren't doing interviews (just giving out class dates after you applied).

They've also scraped a wingtip on a clear and calm day

Oremstein is tougher than a cockroach. He ain’t going anywhere until the earth opens up and takes him back to hell with the rest of the demons.

absolutely. How long has he been running that place, a couple of decades or more? Longer than JC has been in existence. He indeed isn’t going anywhere. He’s survived all kinds of crap and hatred, and still manages to be able to keep collecting Harleys.

Since 1998! You want some laughs, look up his history as a stock broker before his airline career. Dude has always been crooked.

JO and Uncle Hulas will still be running airlines long after Scott Kirby and Ed Bastian are gone

Understatement of the year.

Nothing like plugging in your tablet, verifying it says its charging and then go to bed only to wake up to an uncharged tablet.

I finally started waiting until I saw at least a 5% rise before I went to bed.
