Merger between US Airways and America West.

Who knows? It's not even up to the individual companies. The whole industry is in the hands of the creditors now and you can bet they are burning the midnight oil trying to figure the best way to come out whole.

It's a good guess that any mergers will involve layoffs of somebody though.

What would the combined airline be called, US West, America Airways, or something new?

I think this could be good for the industry in that it takes a bankrupt airline out of the picture and creates a new national LCC to compete with AirTran and Southwest. I just hope there are no layoffs.

I"m thinking US America Air West.

I was hearing that they'd be operating under US Airways... which IMO, i think is a bad idea...but that's IMO

Instead of operating one under the other, they should close down both and merge all the aircraft, employees, and etc to make on LCC.

That is if the government doesn't have a vietna, like Air America in Iraq right now.

As with what occured at my place of employment when we merged with Bank One.
They decided the new name for the new company would be Chase or JPMorgan Chase.
Bank One though a pretty well known bank in the midwest and southwest was a pretty new bank.
Chase though only in New York,New Jersey and Texas and known mostly as an east coast bank.
It had the stronger more well known name/presence in both the industry and the world.
So Bank Ones branches/buildings everywhere (if they haven't already) will soon reflect the name Chase.
Likewise the new name for the two airlines America West and US Airways is they successfully merge probably will fall under the name of US Airways.
Due to US Airways having the larger more well known name both in the indstry and the world.
Lets just hope if they merge they come up with a new livery for the merged airline.

Not to monday morning quarterback, but I think I'd create an altogether new name. America West is NOT known on the east coast, similar to when people ask me who I fly for, they say "The facuet company?" on the west coast.

I'm the biggest America West fan on earth, but it sounds very 'regional', but then USAiways sounds very "Is my reservation this June going to be ok?" because of the constant negative speculation.

I'd talk about how the name change helped another southern airline, but I don't have the patience to field a bunch of hate mail.

Yes, one airline related business that has been booming the past several years is aircraft paint. When it doubt, repaint.

Yes I agree America West is lil know beyond the west coast. US AIRWAYS is both little known on the west but very infamous for being in bankruptcy.
And for the fiasco that ocurred over the holiday traveling season.
I'd come up with a new name/livery reflecting the strenghts of the newly merged company.
I just wonder what this will mean and how it will affect us here in Phoenix?
So Doug (rhetorical question) care to speculate when the faucet company is going merge or aquire a certain southern Texas airline?

To be honest, and from what I've heard from people that have been through mergers, they usually form "quickly" and without much notice.

Kind of like waking up one morning and reading in the paper about it.

About getting an IAH base, the gentleman that had the big boner for that left a few years ago.

But seriously, the last eight years, it's been like "Hey man, keep this on the down-low, but I have a buddy on the 'fourth floor' who said that the (insert airline here) reps were here last week and the training department received a bunch of manuals covering (airline from above)'s fleet...

If USAir and AWA are going to merge, it'll be in the next two weeks. Anything longer than that, it's just a dumass analysts pipedream.

Techically, HP is a LCC. It's either gonna be a shot in the arm for US Airways or a total drag down for HP. EIther way, merging/acquiring is gonna be messy.

Is this good or bad for pilots?

They are both ALPA carriers and there are established rules in place for merging pilot lists. While it may be bad in the short term as some routes are moved around, I think this may be a good idea long-term. Two carriers with complementary route structures, and USAirways' international capacity. So my thinking is the positive effect of the new company staying in business, instead of one or both existing companies going under. A job is a nice thing to have.

If Airways is left in charge in any way, shape, or form, they'll screw it up. They ruined PSA, ruined Piedmont, ruined Allegheny. Just ask the employees.

Great merger in theory, but both companies are known for being inefficient and full of unhappy folks. They better have low ticket prices...

At least it's a carrier that's making a profit (or at least did last time around when fuel was cheaper) instead of bankrupt United this time around. The fact is some carriers are gonna have to go, either through consolidation or flat out disappearing. I do agree that US Airways needs to give up some control to the guys at America West. Didn't they go through bankruptcy in the 90s sometime?

AWA has been through two bankruptcy filings in it's time. The first time, the state of Arizona bailed them out, the second time, the feds did.
