Mazzie Flying Service

As you get better, you'll be able to take on more. I think I had something like 12 students at my peak. Maybe I'll drop in next week and say hi.

Not this time of year.

IFR in a ME?

Mazzie has the option of completing the IFR training in a ME a/c. Rod Machado recomends on his website to do the IFR rating in a SE a/c.
Anyone from Mazzie got an opinion on this?
Thanks

You'll be a much better instrument and multi pilot by the time you're done doing the IR in the twin. Things happen faster so you have to be more prepared and farther ahead of the plane, and the extra time in the twin will make you much more competent flying something with two engines.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. :)

Subpilot, I guess you must be quite busy instructing since you have'nt been in here for a while. Hows everything going at Mazzei? Got any pics
you could post?

Sorry for the long delay. Mazzei is insanely busy. The challenge is not finding enough students to keep you busy. The challenge is knowing how many to take on and when to say no to new students because they will offer you one or two new students per week. I have my MEI checkride tomorrow then I will be all done with my training. I spent $1000 Sunday flying the Seneca for 4 hours. We did single engine ops at Castle airport and then did a SFO bay tour to burn off the rest of my hours. I am really questioning my decision to get my MEI now because it cost so much and I would have to teach hundreds of hours in a multi to recoup my training cost. Oh well, to late now.

Well, it's easy for me to say, I guess, but you should consider it an investment and not plan on recouping your costs until you move on. Multi-time is key and if you can get some there as a CFI, it's a pretty big deal. Difficulty getting multi time held me back a couple of years early on in my career. I'm not kidding.

When were you in KFAT 72'?

I was there from Aug 99 til May of 01. Flying a Desilsoarus Nine now and loving not hauling passengers anymore :nana2: .

I still live out here in Fresno. lol

I posted on here a while back (somewhere around page 3 of this thread I believe). Well, since then, and after speaking to a few folks here at Jetcareers, I am happy to report I went back to school and FINALLY finished my degree after starting it long ago. I earned my degree in Criminology last semester and loved every minute of it. :)

Now, at age 29 and married, I am considering going to Mazzie Flying Service and doing the career pilot program. I am planning on possibly attending at the end of the Summer next year so I can pay for most of the training in cash. The huge loan repayment doesn't really seem like much "fun" for my wife and I, lol.

I read your blog, Sub, and must say CONGRATS, although it is somewhat belated. It's good to hear that everything is going well for you out there. I enjoyed reading blog and like how it takes the reader from Day 1 to completion (though one never really "completes" learning to fly, hehe). Who knows, maybe if I start out there one day I will end up being your student if you are still around. :)

On a side note, for folks wondering if Mazzie is a decent school, I must say that I don't think I've ever really heard any complaints about the school other than schedualing conflicts once in a while. I have visited there a few times and I don't have any complaints other than it was really busy...and you can't really complain about that! Decent price, good training, nice instructors, varied weather-good location for different types of weather and ATC, NO hurricanes, solid history, and NO BS. You can't really ask for much more than that. Also, the fact that DE727UPS sort of gives his approval of the school (based on what he has heard), goes a long way in my book. He's a good guy to pay attention to. God gives us 2 eyes, 2 ears, and 1 mouth for a reason; so we watch and listen 2x as much as we yap.

Again, congrats to you Subpilot for taking the plunge and following your dream! *Big thumbs up!*

Thanks MCP,
To date I have 900hrs and 40multi and work out of Fresno Chandler airport. After flying with alot of people with different flight training backgrounds, I must say that Mazzei has a very good technique to teach people to fly an airplane competently and safely. I teach the same method that I learned at Mazzei and I have had great success so far in my young career.

Sounds great! Nice hours.

You said you are out of Chandler, what happened to the school at KFAT?

Did they move, or do they have 2 locations?

No, I moved back in April. I am an indepentent flight instructor working out of Memley Aviation. I was attracted to the nicer planes and laid back atmosphere that Mazzie did not have. Mazzie is a great school to learn how to fly at but they are a machine.

Ahhh, ok. I was wondering how Mazzie would manage to operate out of Chandler....there'd be no room! :D

How do you like instructing out there? I always liked Chandler, the whole airport seems like it has a family atmosphere about it.

Since I already live in Fresno, and have been for the past 11 years, I'm serioulsy considering staying out here and training at Mazzie. Heading out to Florida or Arizona or wherever doesn't seem like such a good idea with Mazzie right here. Your thoughts?

I am considering Mazzei for ME training in the PA44 and was wondering if anyone can tell me what the weather is like there this time of year (Jan to Feb). I am assuming the school has minimum ceiling reqs to practice OEI maneuvers-- how often does it get foggy enough that you can't even get up? What are the apartments like, and is it possible to commute to and from the apartments with no car (they claim it is possible on the website....) $3000 plus is certainly more than other schools, but then again Mazzei seems to have a good rep. Any current students out there who can give more advice? Thanks.:nana2:

If you don't get a reply you could pm Subpilot. I visited the school and the appartments are like a 15 min walk to the school. Seemed like a good school.:)

Weather in Jan and Feb is aweful. Can it be done...yes, but I would wait until at least March to go there so that you have no weather delays.

I rode my bike from the apartments all the time. I usually arrived a little sweaty thanks to the hot weather, but it was absolutely do-able. Also, I started at Mazzei with 0 time in Sept. '03 and finished in April '04 with very few wx delays over the winter. Of course, I was doing my instrument training during much of the crappy weather, so that was a major factor in reducing my delays.

Last year, it was foggy, but this year, as a CFII looking for some IMC, the weather sucks, clear skies every day, all day. Only it's freezing cold, and don't book flights at 7AM unless you like to scrape frost of airplane wings.
