Martinaire, Ameriflight, Mountain Air Cargo

That crash wasn't a failure, but haven't they had two engine failures and off field landings?

9505B ate a bird and had an off field landing (one of it's four rebuilds).

A few months before the crash in Michigan, they had an engine failure over Oklahoma where the pilot set it down on a road but slid off the side during roll out.

The father of the pilot who died in the MI crash has been taken for a ride by some greedy personal injury lawyers. He has my sympathy, but his assertion that the crash was the fault of MRA's allegedly shoddy maintenance doesn't agree with my experience while working there for four years. I won't deny that 15000 hour freighters had their share of maintenance issues, but Martinaire did a pretty good job of keeping those airplanes airworthy when I was there.

That happened right before I started at MRA.

It's amazing that 9505B is still going :D

I've got to agree with @USMCmech, Martinaire did a pretty good job keeping their fleet airworthy and I never had an issue with anything maintenance related during my time there

Flipped up on a wing in a tornado - new set of wings
Put down in the dirt in Texas - new engine
Midair in Oklahoma - new set of wings
Engine failure in NC - new engine
Massive electrical failure - new panel (and a SB from Cessna)

Flew crooked as hell but that thing was a tank.

Plus, it was famous by Cessna standards:

Have you looked into Alpine Air at all? There are some other Fedex Feeders too. CSA is part of MAC, but there's also Baron, Corporate Air, Wiggins and a few others whos names escape me. I see no reason to go to Ameriflight or Martinaire. Ameriflight's abused it's pilots for years and we had a former co-worker who had his base changed on him after training so he came and worked for us instead. I've also heard good things about Freightrunners.

Martinaire pays less than the Fedex feeders and the planes aren't as nice. Unless they have a base you really want I'd say go to the Fedex feeders every single time.

You work for one of the feeders? Or alpine air?

Not at the moment, but I've got a friend at Alpine Air. They start you off at 43k in a 99, plus a 7k a year retention bonus and 56k when you upgrade to the 1900. http://www.airlinepilotcentral.com/airlines/cargo/alpine_air

Martinaire just doesn't pay as much as everyone else is offering. Mountain Air Cargo is 43k for a Caravan and some of the other Fedex feeders are near 48k a year. It seems like a no brainer, fly a very well equipped Fedex Caravan for more money or go fly Martinaire.

You are aware the Ameriflight owns Wiggins, are you not? And why go to AMF over a 208 operator, how about twin time versus single engine.

I was referring to Martinaire in relation to the Fedex Feeders as I can't think of an advantage they offer over any of them. I'd probably would've gone to a Fedex Feeder awhile back had they flown twins. The initial post from this guy was about flying in Michigan and from my experiences I've known a few pilots that in years past have been told one thing and then assigned something else by Ameriflight and yes I'm aware that Wiggins was bought out by Ameriflight. If he could get the Michigan base he wanted Ameriflight might be a great option.

Yeah, I am a former employee of the Ameriflight LAN base in Michigan, was flying the 1900. I second that, if you want to work at an Ameriflight base that I really have absolutely no complaints about, beyond that schedule being really hard, that is the one I would go with. I worked at a different base before coming here and I was absolutely going to quit after my 1 year commitment is up. However it may be hard to get hired directly in to the 1900 or metro, as that is all we have here. As far as the pay, it is pretty much right on what APC, or any other thread lists, you can plan on a little more in LAN since you can work extra every week, and the schedule is 4:30am show monday, home at 8:30, 9:00, or 11:00pm depending on the run, and then the rest of the week 6:00am to the same evening times, monday through friday or saturday, again depending on the run. You will sit all day in an outstation in the upper peninsula and a crew house/ car will be provided, or a hotel. There is no per diem for normal days.

Both Empire and MAC fly ATR-42/72's. Last time I checked the ATR is a twin.

You're right, but their starting pay is so low and they still want a contract. With how little you fly it'd be at least 2 years before an upgrade and even then for a captain the pays not excellent. I looked into it and should have been clearer in my post.

I know for a fact Corporate Air will hire you for whatever base you want...GFK (soon to be FAR), GTF, CPR, SLC, HNL......

Wiggins is owned by Ameriflight now; their pay is among the highest of FedEx feeders but I've heard they have incredibly high turnover. We had to cover a couple of their EWR runs in January/February because one of their pilots lost his medical. The also don't give their floater pilots every 5th week off, so they pretty much live on the road.

Honestly Mountain Air Cargo seemed very professional and they have upped the pay of their ATR FO positions so I might have to take back what I said earlier. I spoke with them over a year and a half ago and their HR department was very organized as opposed to Empire and the person I was talking to was excellent. I looked into the UNV base for Wiggins and would be interested, but Wiggins offers so little vacation time its just not worth it according to Airline Pilot Central. I'll be working along side an older gentleman that worked at MAC awhile ago and may have been a former chief pilot, but is long retired and now flies for Orion for fun and he's a really good guy.
