Malaysian 777 Plane Crashes in Ukraine

Somewhat human nature.

When there's a big story on a 24 hour new cycle on cable television, it's 5% fact, 15% opinion 80% "And now, the Kardashian Connection" I really haven't seen a way to avoid it and I'm just as guilty as the next guy! :)

This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 15% pain! and 100% reason to remember the name!
Please tell me that I'm not the only one to get this song stuck in my head when reading this post...

I hate to sound like the smug, liberal hipster feminine hygiene product that I have, but I don't have cable.

I guess I can stream CNN to my TV, but that's a pointless exercise.

An airliner shot out of the sky in cruise on an airway flown by members of this forum, 298 innocent people suffered what must have been a horribly traumatic death leaving behind scores of children, parents, siblings, friends and coworkers, the world is scrambling to find out what happened, and mean while, here we have a 20 page thread about isolationism and Israel. Great. Stay classy JC.

Youve been around long enough...Unless you have some secret potion, not that one, you wont stop it....

And now on CNN....."I think Malaysian Airlines is being targeted. There were other planes in the same area that didnt get hit." These two incidents are related...."

How on earth do they plan on securing the crash site? Honestly, it really doesnt look good for there to be any type of investigation. There are still bodies all over the place and apparently looting has started. Putin has no shame. Regardless if it was unintentional. Suck up your pride, get your bullying ass on the horn to the rebel leaders and open a line of communication to establish a legit investigation or at least allow one to take place. We already know what happened and who likely did it anyway. At least allow those countries who lost people on the plane to retrieve their dead. There is no way out of this for him. The more they resist and destroy evidence, the easier it will be for the world to point the finger.

I may be in the minority here but I think this incident is the beginning of the end for Putin.

Another concern of mine is that, I hope this incident doesn't put some ideas into some other terrorists minds who would use similar weapons to do similar hits on civilian airliners elsewhere, seeing as this has happened without apparent consequences as yet. I mean the copycat phenomenon that usually follows landmark crimes, unless efforts are made to weed em out right away.

Now that's just funny. George Friedman is hardly the, "leading minds in geopolitical history and forecasting." And how's that "Coming War with Japan" working out for you?
He doesn't profess to be the messiah of geopolitical forecasting... But if you have read his book "The Next 10 Years" you would see that much of what he predicted has indeed happened. Don't discount him without reading a wide swathe of his work. He merely maintains that geography is the determining factor in a nation's actions. You can change a thousand things about your nation but you can't change the realities imposed upon you by geography. And this is what shapes nation's actions on a world-wide scale. So the same inherent issues Japan faced geographically pre-WW2 (no inherent natural resources, geographically isolated) are still the same issues that will shape it's actions and decisions into the future. Not to mention that many Fortune 500 companies, Fortune 100 companies, and even our own government and other nations have payed handsomely for his services.

I don't think any organization would be stupid enough to do this deliberately, it's counter-productive. Even on 9/11, the airliners were really "collateral" targets...the goal was to hit the seats of power in the US. Even the worst enemies of nation-states view civilian populations at worst with benign contempt. It's certainly not out of the question that some of the more radical Al-Q types (or say, ISIS) might try it, but it seems pretty unlikely that they'd have the equipment.

That depends...what equipment did we give them in their last insurgency that "we" supported?

*We being the general "we", and more specifically our government's back room and even overt support of insurgencies/freedom fighters/terrorists, depending on which side you're on...

Fair point. Saw some pictures of some ISIS guys driving an Abrams in to a ditch the other day...or, well, who knows, maybe they found it there after the IA clowns drove it there whilst running away.

Iranian Army AH-1 Cobra helo crews are going to love the live fire target practice with those, that they'll be getting with their TOW missiles.

No doubt. But I'm with you: Instead of going off on a discussion of geopolitics, it needs to be realized that this isn't just some obscure accident that's happened on the other side of the world. A civilian jet being shot down over continental Europe on a heavily-trafficked route (flown by many of us personally) is just as bad as the same thing happening on J65 to PHX. It's scary, hits very close to home, and discussing Israel/isolationism/whatever the hell these people are talking about in this thread is completely unimportant.

Drop the mic. DROP THAT MIC!

That's "J65 to PHX" of the Europe to Asia world. Not as big as "LIFFY" coasting in but its like someone shot an AGM-65 on I-10 and Texans can't see the significance.

You can bring a horse to water. And he might sneeze in the trough, I don't know.
