Malaysian 777 Plane Crashes in Ukraine

It's easy to say "something needs to be done," but the reality is that there isn't really anything that can be done that doesn't involve war and more death. Are you willing to send someone off to die to protect wreckage?
I never said anything about starting a war or sending others off to die. I have no idea why you went there, that really wasn't necessary. Demands and economic sanctions don't appear to be having the desired effect, however. That's pretty much what I do know. I don't have any answers, suggestions or solutions. I wish to hell that I did. I wish even more that those who are in the capacity to do so and have the power and some control, did.

That's not it. That is an An-something shot down in the days prior.

A. Imagine the terror of the pilots and crew inside that thing falling to their impending doom.

And B. The MH17 shoot down was likely similar, with many on board conscious just the same.... just lots more souls and a much larger plane.

Western Europe is not the world. Here's the deal. If you fall dead in some cities in Eastern Europe or even Asia, most people would get pissed that your corpse is blocking the sidewalk.

My first Moscow layover, the driver was telling us how there was road construction going on where they were repairing potholes and some oligarch in a Mercedes ran across one, got stuck in traffic, stepped out of his car, killed two of the construction workers, and drove on.

And the bodies laid in the street for two more hours during rush hour as people drove around them and honked.

This wasn't some story on Buzzfeed.

The world outside of what we know is an oft cruel and dangerous place.

Was it Bill Gates who said to Amanpour on CNN that the world is a better and/or safer place? If so...was he right?

Time of useful consciousness at 33k is certainly long enough to realize that you're strapped in to a seat that's freefalling towards the ground, and there seem to have been large enough chunks hitting the ground that I don't think there was an "instantly fatal" degree of explosion/fire at alt. I'd give dollars to donuts that at least some of those people got the chance to realize that they were about to die.

And yeah, screw the checking-all-the-stereotype-boxes backwoods peasants who did it, with whatever is most unpleasant and close at hand. Revolting.

I would think the brain would immediately throw up all kinds of protective walls around you...IOWs....Shock. I would hope this would protect the victims from realizing what was happening.

Safer than it has been if you look at statistics, is that what you're asking?

I think so. Then he would be right. Of course, there is more potential danger now than say....several hundred years ago....particularly if the wrong stuff gets into the wrong people's hands.

100 years ago people commonly died of infection. Human life expectancy was around 45 years even in advanced countries. Wars weren't fought with machines, they were fought in trenches and on open fields, mano-a-mano. No penicillin. No refrigerated food. No anti-bacterial soap. No calling 911. Life was nasty, brutish and short. That was 100 years ago. You want to compare life today with several hundred years ago? Thanks, but I'll stay here.

Modern warfare has introduced the potential for large-scale destruction, but also pinpoint weaponry that minimizes civilian casualties. Google "Dresden." Although that destructive potential exists, but for two exceptions it hasn't been employed, and it has been argued convincingly that those two detonations resulted in fewer lives lost on both sides by the end of hostilities.
