The author lost credibility off the bat when he said that going on oxygen is a no-no in a fire. Donning the oxygen mask is a memory item for fire/smoke in the cockpit on any checklist I've seen.

That said, his theory is at least as likely as aliens!

Yeah thats a little strange. Maybe his thinking is if you are trying to starve the fire of Oxygen then donning 100% O2 masks is a bad idea. Personally I would like to be breathing WHILE I'm putting out the fire. You could also don the smoke hood if you are extinguishing a fire specifically in the flight deck. When I think of devastating in flight fires now I always think about that UPS Jet that went down a few years ago due to the Lithium batteries. Scary Stuff.

If only there was a regular examination that pilots could be subjected to. Something conducted by a medical professional who knows what the FAA is looking for. Perhaps an in-office meeting with a medical doctor that involved a physical examination, drug screen, vision and hearing tests. The type of exam that would be increasingly difficult to pass based upon the degree of responsibility undertaken as a pilot.

I need to ask a question here posited to me by someone who knows far less about aviation than I do, which isn't saying much.

Does the ACARS system (or any other communications system) on the 777 have any kind of interface to the FMS in such a way that the FMS/AP could be externally slaved/controlled/steered?

I realize that borders on Hollywood-terror-fantasy, but I honestly don't know much about how the systems are integrated. I replied with, "I doubt it seriously, but I'll check. Because, you know, I might be wrong."

Hey, I'm just relying on Google search images to get it right. A google search of Gary Busey returned that photo. It's not my job to correct the internet, but it apparently is some of y'all's.

I still can't get over how Mitchell the sim pilot on CNN shows up to work. You have been on TV for days now dude. Put on a short with buttons. Even one button. I know i'm petty, but whatever.

Two things seem counter-intuitive: 1) Climbing to thin air in order to extinguish a fire; and 2) NOT donning oxygen when smoke starts to fill the cockpit.

One would also think that a wheelwell overtemp warning would have sounded about 10 minutes into the flight.
