Lump in throat

To answer the question about what next. I do plan to keep flying. Plan A is to go to work for a new freight operation started by some guys I know. If not that then........well, I'll think of something.

Ever think of doing some teaching? Folks like you who have been flying for a while bring so much insight and wisdom to the table. That's so valuable to someone who is learning.

No, no and no. It's not my game. I like taking people and things A to B.

Congratulations!!!

most pilots I know (like Doug) tend to get frustrated with the whole dealings of flying for the big guys... dealing with unruly pax, having to be in airports all the time, always away from home, constant management tripe... constantly complaining about how they love to fly - but wish they could fly for fun...

yet when the day comes to retire, all the bad things from the past seem to be gone and i bet your left feeling like your not going to fly anymore...

just make sure you do keep flying.. if anything, there are volunteer organizations that need pilots and you could always fly your wife around for fun...so you don't necessarily have to "leave it behind"...

Have fun on this trip!!

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm one that always thought airline flying was flying for fun. I just enjoy the game. Last trip Potomac approach hangs us up high for the river visual. Getting down, flying the approach, not scaring the peeps too much: my last leg to ATL last night a 717 dawdles on the runway so it's a low altitude go-around to a short base and back in. Again not trying to scare the peeps. Although my wife said the pax applauded after my F/O announced why we had done the low go. Apparently some thought maybe a deranged old pilot was refusing to make his final landing! All a very fun game to me.

So I'm going to try a new flying game or two. Only been across the pacific once so a lot to learn if my new venture gets going.

Not yet, I've got to go through the lounge next Wednesday, so probably then.

How does your wife feel now that your retired? I've heard from a few that the wives get a bit nervous because their so used to your schedules of being home, being gone... I kinda wonder how I'll take it myself when time comes! haha

After I retire, I guess I'll have to buy a Baron and a bass boat, so that I can always stay gone.

Don't want to disturb the home life....

Well, let's put it this way. When I got back home after my 9/11 trip, the first thing she said was: "I don't know if I want you flying anymore or not." After a minutes pause she said: "No, on second thought, if you were home all the time I'd have to take you out and shoot you."

Same with my kids. Dad is a dish best sampled on a periodic basis, except when the car's broken or funds are low!

The wife is pretty nervous about me going early. Unfortunately, on my trip we ran into an old D classmate who sat down with us for coffee and spent quite awhile trying to convince me (himself actually) why staying was the smarter option. So she was shook up a little. An expensive seafood dinner and a bottle of champagne brought her back around.

well, she's always welcome to clue us girls over at FCAPA in on "what to do when your pilot retires".. as well as vent when she needs to!

just because your retired doesn't mean she's not still a "pilot's wife"...

so - do you get to keep all your benefits (travel/medical) or do you lose most of them?

So you were the one who did the go around. At least someone did last night on 26R. It was kinda late I would say after 11 or so..

Great thread. Best of luck on retirement! My Dad just retired a few months ago, and has been enjoying it immensely. Just get yourself a dog and a Playstation 2 and you should be set.

I have 37 years until retirement, yet it feels so close...

The old saying "it goes fast" is true. Where did your dad retire from?

Don't know about playstation but I've got the dog or she has me.

He was a Postal Inspector for 30 years. Federal LEO for 34. (US Marshalls before that.)

We got him MLB 2004 for PS2, and he hasn't put it down since. Every time I get back from a trip, he's either out walking the dog or playing that game! LOL

So really what happened was that you wanted to get one last approach in before parking. I remember the runway being completely clear....just kidding

My mother says the same thing about my dad! She says you're not getting any younger, you should retire. Then she says, no, wait a minute. I'd drive the kids crazy telling them to do something to get you out of my hair. Keep on working until they kick you out!
