Lump in throat

flyover

New Member
It's a strange day. I'm pulling this uniform out of the closet and putting it on for the last time. 25 years with one company and I never thought I'd leave before I was forced too.

But then I'm thankful to have had 25 years and to be able to leave under my own terms. I have many friends who haven't been so lucky. So not complaining.

But still a little lump in my throat as I suit up today. Now all I have to do is suck it in and get these pants fastnened, just one more time.

Retiring from an airline job? Hey mtsu_av8er, did you get the CFI job or not?

Congratulations!!!

most pilots I know (like Doug) tend to get frustrated with the whole dealings of flying for the big guys... dealing with unruly pax, having to be in airports all the time, always away from home, constant management tripe... constantly complaining about how they love to fly - but wish they could fly for fun...

yet when the day comes to retire, all the bad things from the past seem to be gone and i bet your left feeling like your not going to fly anymore...

just make sure you do keep flying.. if anything, there are volunteer organizations that need pilots and you could always fly your wife around for fun...so you don't necessarily have to "leave it behind"...

Have fun on this trip!!

Congrats on a career well done. If you get some pictures of the firehose washdown (or whatever they call it) be sure to post them. It's always a blast to see those.

Good Luck on whatever retirement brings your way.

Taking the early out eh? Smart, I would too.

There's nothing more surreal than wearing the uniform for what you know will be the last time. (I only wish my leaving had been voluntary!) I can't stand the sight of my uniforms now, they reside in storage bins the basement.

It'll be a while before you'll stop thinking to yourself "Now, when do I have to go back to work?"

Well, you'll never have to wear polyester again, buddy. Congrats on a long safe career. Now you can write that book you've always wanted to write!

Thanks all,

Just got back tonight. It was a four day trip. All went well except my last leg in to ATL. We were an hour late. All our connections were told they would have to spend the night in the airport as there were no hotels left in ATL. Man I hated to do that to my customers. Plus had to do a go-around for another airplane on the runway. The pax all accused me of not wanting to quit.

Plus, you'll appreciate this Doug, Ron Allen was on my flight, stopped and talked and signed my retirement card that the flight attendants made for me.

But the trip was otherwise great and a good way to end with the big D. The wife went along and had a good time in SEA.

To answer the question about what next. I do plan to keep flying. Plan A is to go to work for a new freight operation started by some guys I know. If not that then........well, I'll think of something.

Nope. It couldn't have been a better 25. But I was lucky. I got hired by the right company at the right time. It is always better to be lucky than good.

I passed on the hose down. We've been wearing out the firetrucks in ATL and besides, I still have some flying in me.
