Loading GPS on ground

In the KC-135 we pull breakers all the time. The TO tells us to, so instruments aren't powered needlessly on the ground.

I don't see a problem with it as long as you know exactly what happens when you pull it. For example, what happens when you pull the avionics CB, with the avionics master in the "OFF" position?

which version of the -135 are you on? I was an R model guy on block 25's and then 30's until 4 years ago. I was out at Kadena when they got the block 40, but I never got a chance to get qual'd in it.
 
I wouldn't treat a circuit breaker as a switch, They will wear down over time.

My plane has two batteries and I can turn one on and load everything up, and not having to worry about running the starter battery down.

or I will only set the first fix or two in the GPS and while I'm flying enter in the rest of the flight plan, litterally it only takes a min to enter everything in, and its good on the engine to be up to operating temp anyway :)
 
But especially in more complicated airplanes (like the -135, e.g., with literally hundreds of circuit breakers and a wiring diagram that takes up multiple pages), as a general rule you probably shouldn't treat them like a switch.

That's probably a fair point. I definitely don't have any idea what's right or wrong to do in a transport category aircraft, not having flown one. Just speaking from my personal experience. I think we're probably basically on the same page.

but seriously, i don't see a problem with what you are doing. The nice thing about our flight school is that all our G1000 planes, over time have about every local flight saved (both VFR and IFR).
 
If it takes you 2 min to program the GPS with the engine running then you're saving $3.00 (if the airplane is $100/hr).

Having said that, the plane I frequently fly has a hobbs meter tied to the master switch so regardless if the engine is running or not, the hobbs is still ticking.
 
Good practice or not?

I have whoever is sitting right seat do it after takeoff. Which is a good time, as they love to change my clearance 30 seconds after takeoff around here.

On the G1000, it is easy enough to do it in the air. Once the autopilot is on, you've got plenty of time....
 
I usually put the first few in after getting my clearance, then load the rest of them when in cruise. Who knows what will happen when you pick up your clearance, they could totally change your routing. As for a VFR flight, "we doon need no stinkin gps'es." Just look outside and read the sectional. If the airplane I use to teach in has a GPS, and we are doing a x-country, the first thing that happens is it get's turned off, or to a page that does no good for navigation. Learn how to do it the right way, then you can navigate the easy way.
 
Yah i would wait til after i got my clearance to load it up in a busy airspace. How often do you get "as filed" out of, lets say, So Cal.
 
Doing this prior to engine start sounds like an excellent way to keep your eyes outside once you start up, however I don't recommend pulling CBs for this. Each time a CB is pulled it's 'life expectancy' decreases slightly.

I make it a point to ensure my students do this method, as well as load and save multiple flight plans to ensure there is minimal reprogramming required in flight and enroute. However if you have a pilot friend available in the other seat they're the best choice :)
 
To add: The CB pulling I guess is a/c specific because the reason I don't recommend this practice is the C172S specifically discourages it.

Yes, it certainly seems to be aircraft specific. New 172S and old C-135s, no, it seems. But the company I work for teaches it as mandatory cold weather practice on the mu2-35,36, and 60. They even have little plastic rings on the breakers in question to make them easier to pull. I guess the moral of the story is: Read the book, follow the procedure. Or maybe "sweeping statements are generally sweepingly wrong" (I include my "nah, it's fine" in that category).
 
5 fixes will only take 2 minutes tops to put into a flight plan. So you won't be saving much fuel. But like somebody has mentioned you could go ahead and get the weather and maybe call up clearance.

It annoys me to no end to see pilots sitting on the ramp, engines running at 1500 RPM, twisting away on the knobs of their GNS 430. I realize you've got enough money to buy that fancy airplane, but damn, talk about throwing money down the drain.
The person may be needing to let the engine temps come up/stabilize so they don't have to sit at the hold short line for 3 minutes waiting. I can think of worse things to be doing with the engine running on the ramp than plugging in the flight plan. Checking a new ATIS is probably something I'd prefer to do, but if you need the engine to warm up, then program the GPS as long as you're paying enough attention to notice the plane sliding forward when/if your toes slip off of the brakes.

That said, I'd prefer to pre-program it. I can be drinking coffee and warming myself up while I'm warming up the engines.

If we ALL save 2 minutes of fuel on every flight, imagine the difference we would collectively make!
...and imagine if we all just kept the tires inflated and got regular tune-ups. Oh wait....:nana2:

As for normal ops, however, I think if they wanted you to treat a circuit breaker like a switch, they would have installed a switch.

What plane is it? Does the GPU start call for master on or off? If off, the GPU probably bypasses the battery bus which may bypass the hobbs meter. Depends on the installation.

As said earlier the airlines load theirs at the gate before push and the PNF updates the unit on taxi if there is any changes.

In GA I don't see a problem with loading it before engine start as it safer and cheaper to do it then, especially if you are single pilot. I would use caution about pulling breakers. You are setting yourself up for a problem later on if you forget to set one and if a FED were to see it he may raise an eyebrow or two.

If you are comfortable you can do it while taxing. I programmed them a lot on taxi when I was flying 135. I would just get the first 50 miles in or so and then get the rest once airborne an on the a/p. a lot of this will come down to familiarity with the unit, route, and grounds ops/congestion at the airport you are at. Just use your best judgment.

I personally love getting the departure changes 3 times on taxi out. :sarcasm:

In most aircraft, you'd have to leave the battery on for a signicant amount of time to drain it. A few minutes loading fixes into the GPS shouldn't hurt anything.

As far pulling breakers goes. There was a procedure for pulling the fuel boost pump breakers in the chieftan due to it draining the battery if left on for any significant time and also leaving an awfully big puddle of gas under the engines. It also caused flooded starts. I chock it up to lack of forethought by the piper folks!

And just to clarify for those that haven't flown the Chieftain, this was not for the normal fuel pumps you'd turn on during takeoff and landing. These things were on all the time and provided a head of pressure (to the...intake port?) so that you wouldn't have any fuel flow problems with the thing. They ran all the time, but when you were doing your preflight, there was no reason for them to be on.

They'd be pushed in prior to start. It was probably a checklist item.

I think the diagram in the AFM/PIM shows the hobbs running off of oil pressure, but I remember from my rental days that isn't the case. Maybe that was the 152...

Yeah, and pulled out rolling into "the blocks" just before shut down... I remember that now. Damn...it's been a while, I guess.
