This weekend at the lake I met a real life Jackass. This young adult wants to be an airline pilot, and is currently working on his private. Sound good huh? Well, come to find out he has had 3 DUI's in the last 18 months. Now talk about people that are blind to the industry. Also I saw him fire up a few joints at his campsite. Yeah he is well on the way.

LMFAO, I did burst his bubble though. I was trying to save him from spending more money then he already has, as he has charged it all on loans.
 
That's too bad!! but hey, when you don't do your research and understand the consequences of actions taken - that's what you get. I don't feel bad for the guy...you don't get anywhere in this career unless you work hard and stay clean, that is - if you really want it...

apparently, this guy doesn't.

It was nice of you to try and tell him that he doesn't even have a slim chance with the 3 DUI's on his record. hopefully, he'll enjoy just flying for fun and will be looking for a new line of work because if he goes any further and nobody continues to let him know he doesn't have a snowballs chance, then all that money will be spent for naught.
 
The sad thing is if he continues doing this he probably won't make it to live his dream.
 
probably? no... he won't make it at all, end of story... airlines don't like anything on your record - period.

if there's 2 guys in the hiring pool and they both have the same qualifications but only 1 has a spotless record, they're going to take the guy that's clean because it's less liability for them in the long run.
 
Well, there's a positive and there's a negative.

The positive is that there will be one less yahoo to compete with for a job.

The negative is that he's going to be emailing me about having a drug possession charge on his record and angry because even Air Nairobi won't answer his resume.

People have to realize that aviation has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy when it comes to drugs. Your company WILL fire you and the FAA WILL REVOKE your certificates.

Direct and to the point. There is a place for him in aviation. I've worked at some of them. I just am thankful I didn't hae to make a career there.

when i was 13 i was taken to court on larceny. i stole my neighbors plastic easter sign that said: "easter bunny come here."

The case never made it to court..but can i still be an airline pilot!?
 
He could wash my windshield.... well on second thought, maybe he should stay away from the ramp, he might blow something up!

but no.. if it's not on your record, then you don't have to worry about it.. altho when you turn 18, I'd check your record to make sure it's spic-n-span! I think you have to wait till 18 to check it right? anyone... anyone... bueller...

Although you can get a lot expunged (especially prior to age eighteen), it is always there, whether it be in local police records or court documents. That being said, I think most airlines just complete a National Agency Check (NAC), which is basically a "run" through our National system (NCIC). MOST of the time, NCIC only includes major crimes (terrorist-affiliations, warrants, etc.). This is not to say you should lie if asked, though.

I should also note that "owning up" to past indiscretions says a lot about character, as many try to displace accountability, or worst of all, cover up incidents.

Keep in mind that my experience is with the law enforcement hiring/security clearance process, which, for the most part, is much more extensive and probative than the civilian aviation process.

I skipped 2 classes in grade 8 and then I was sick for 2 weeks later on in the year, and I didnt have a doctors note so they charged me with truency and the cops came to my house with a warrant when i was like puking in my bathroom, I was friggin 13 years old!!! probation for 5 months

Altho its under the school act and its not a criminal charge and my mom told me its not even on my record, quite embarrising...

What's even more sickening is the fact that such an incident would be uncovered should you apply for say, the FBI. They check your primary school records - GAH! HOWEVER, that is definitely not grounds for disqualification. UNLESS you lie about it. That's basically the main point of background investigations: make sure the individual didn't do anything too heinous, and owns up to what they did do. Talk about uncomfortable, though. Background investigations would make Mother Teresa feel like Anna Nicole Smith.
